Problems/Comments

In the early 2000s, 1300 cubic yards of petroleum contaminated soil was moved 40 miles to a Haines Borough-owned rock pit from the Haines Sawmill site (1508.38.009) with the intention of incorporating the soil into asphalt for the Haines Highway reconstruction project. The soil was not incorporated into the highway. The soil was not moved back to the site due to the expense of trucking the soil. The stockpile was sampled in 2009 where 16 samples were analyzed for diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), and polychlorinated bi-phenyls (PCBs). The concentrations ranged from: DRO: 270–2500 mg/kg, RRO: 970–7,900 mg/kg, and PCBs: non-detect.
