Problems/Comments

On December 15, 2022, a vehicle accident occurred that resulted in a head on crash between an empty methanol tanker trailer and truck, and a loaded jet fuel tanker trailer and truck. Soil that could be removed without destabilizing the adjacent slope or damaging the road was excavated. An estimated maximum of 2000 gallons of diesel removed from the soil and 828 gallons from snow. Soil estimated based on 1 gallon per cubic yard (cy) with approximately 2000 cy excavated. Leaving an estimated minimum of 500 gallons of jet fuel that was not recovered from the site due to excavation limitations of the steep slope next to the site and the roadway. Limited boring samples taken spring 2023 showed the fuel to not be significantly migrating but additional monitoring should be conducted to ensure the remaining fuel does not migrate to the Chulitna River. In 2024, two groundwater monitoring wells were installed to assess if contaminant migration to groundwater was occurring. The monitoring wells were installed in a shallow aquifer and a deeper confined aquifer. Three rounds of groundwater sampling were completed between July 2024 and April 2025. No exceedances of the applicable groundwater cleanup levels were detected.

6/27/2024 Update or Other Action DEC received a work plan deviation request via phone call from Geosyntec to install a 5ft submerged screen instead of a 10ft screened interval intersecting the groundwater interface, due to an unsaturated clay layer being present through the top 29ft of soil. This work plan deviation was approved on 6/27/2024. Sophia Bracio-Martinez
