It is therefore subject to change as new information becomes available. We recommend contacting the assigned project staff prior to making decisions based on this information.
Problems/Comments
The site consists of a 0.15-acre area with one building that is no longer in use and not accessible to the public, but in fair condition. The building is suspected to contain hazardous building materials (HBM), including asbestos. Previously the building had housed an outdated generator, which is no longer in use. Over time, the site is believed to have experienced seepages of oil, petroleum, diesel, and smoke exhaust, which has resulted in an observable discoloration of the soil surrounding the building.
The property was interim-conveyed to the Kokarmiut Corporation in December 1982, from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as a part of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). In 2007, the tribe signed a public utility easement with the native corporation allowing for public utilities to transit the property. The City of Akiak owns the building on the property.
The Akiak Native Community applied for DEC Brownfield Assessment and Cleanup (DBAC) services in Spring 2024 seeking assistance conducting assessment activities at this site.
