Problems/Comments
Alyeska obtained Right of Way (ROW) grants from the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for OMS 106-1. Grant FF095656 allows land use for equipment and material storage and burning of untreated wood waste materials in support of the ongoing maintenance and operations of Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS). Two distinct burn areas are present at the site referred to as the "historical" and "recent" burn pit areas. The historical burn area is approximately 100 ft by 100 ft, and the recent burn area is approximately 50 ft by 75 ft. Six primary soil samples were collected from the historical burn pit area at OMS 106-1. Seven primary and one duplicate sample were collected for analysis from five locations within the recent burn pit area. The burn residue material was typically black and contrasted with the native soils (gravel and sands), which tended to be lighter in coloration (orange). The co-location of these cleanup level exceedances with visible burn residue suggested arsenic concentrations at these locations was anthropogenic in origin, presumably due to the burning of arsenic-treated wood.

2/20/2025 | Site Characterization Report Approved | The DEC reviewed and approved the 2024 OMS 106-1 Burn Pit Additional Site Characterization Report. Nine total samples were taken in 2024 and analyzed for Arsenic to characterize the extent of contamination and waste on site. Four of the six primary samples exceeded human health cleanup level for arsenic. One composite sample exceeded the DEC migration to groundwater cleanup level for Naphthalene. Removal of contaminated soil is to occur in 2025. The DEC did not approve usage of Arctic Zone cleanup levels as the presence of continuous permafrost has not been documented at the site.
