Problems/Comments
Petroleum impacted soil strongly suspected on school property (6/5/1997) where an underground fuel line from the generator building connected to the day tank. Spill quantity uncertain but estimated in hundreds of gallons based on fuel supply gauging. Fencing temporarily restricted access and then a new fuel line was installed and some soils removed to a liner by School maintenance personnel. Community drinking water well within 50 feet of heating oil storage tank and supply lines has thus far shown no petroleum contaminants. Prevention and Emergency Response Program (PERP) staff confirmed soil staining and fuel odors and did some shallow digs (7/30/1997) near the annex to test soils with an HNU and found no levels of contamination where historical spills were suspected to have taken place.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
3/15/2001 | Update or Other Action | Update to reflect administrative file which contains records of conversations with head of maintenance at the school on this date and earlier conversation(s) to obtain information revealed the following beliefs on his part although incidents occurred before his arrival in Sleetmute. First, the petroleum contaminated soil was brought to the school as construction fill from the site of a larger historical spill near the school annex and that the 1997 report based on gauging was likely due to a faulty gauge. Furthermore, other contamination on and near the site result of historical spills such as 1) when the BIA school burned in the 70's and a large fuel tank left its cradle and spilled thousands of gallons of heating oil (no cleanup) and 2) during a refueling operation spilling 5,000 gallons of fuel. | Keather McLoone |

2/5/2008 | GIS Position Updated | verified position using Arc GIS SPAR_StatewideLocator (ArcReader) | Grant Lidren |
3/6/2008 | Update or Other Action | Email from PERP (Bob Carlson) on this date indicates that he responded to 2 relatively small spills at the school in the winter/spring of 2006 and contamination was removed to ~13 ft bgs but continued vertically and under the school. Confirmation samples were collected and that he believes it is a legitimate CS site. Requesting PERP file (as of 8/08 still have not located it but requested it from Bethel again). | Keather McLoone |
10/8/2012 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | Discussion with CS and PERP regarding site history, sources of contamination and RP. | Katrina Chambon |
12/17/2013 | Update or Other Action | CSP spoke with the Director of facilities & maintenance for Kuspuk School District and he confirmed that the school is on city water. The drinking water well near the school has been abandoned. He also stated that the soil that was excavated in 2006 is stockpiled on a liner located out back of the school. | Katrina Chambon |
12/17/2013 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 73793 day tank. | Katrina Chambon |
11/3/2015 | Potentially Responsible Party/State Interest Letter | Sent state interest letter to both the Kuspuk School District, and to the Jack Egnaty Sr. School in Sleetmute. The letter requested contact within 30 days of receipt to determine site status. | Chelsy Passmore |
6/28/2019 | Update or Other Action | Letter provided to BIA providing a list of 31 sites where BIA is a PRP and requesting a meeting to discuss long-term planning for cleanup at these sites. | Gretchen Caudill |
4/22/2021 | Update or Other Action | Site location changed on CSP application. Contacted Susan Hubbard who was the former school principle, she helped identify the location of two of the spills associated with this site. Location on ADEC webmap was changed match the locations of one of the identified spills. Coordinates for both locations are: 61.702313 -157.169812 and 61.703254 -157.170788. Previous ADEC coordinates on CSP application database were closer to the updated coordinates: 61.702500 -157.169722. However, the ADEC contaminated sites map showed coordinates for the site at: 61.701804-157.172119. | Ginna Quesada |
