Contaminated Sites staff reviewed and commented on a draft decision document for a Formerly Used Defense Site on Kodiak Island. Bells Flats is a residential area about four miles south of the town of Kodiak. The area was originally developed in the 1940’s as housing for the Navy Seabee Battalion. Six underground storage tanks and five aboveground storage tanks were removed used for heating oil were removed adjacent to homes in the area. New development over the years commonly used the original Seabee foundations. A cleanup of approximately 600-tons of free product asphalt at nearby Sargent Creek was also completed as an interim removal action. The various sites at Bells Flats have all been cleaned up to method two cleanup levels so the proposed remedial alternative is No Further Action |
