Problems/Comments
Building 2664 was a former warehouse located at the intersection of Broadway and Whitten Lane. It is unknown when the warehouse was demolished (approximately mid - late 1980s), however the foundation is still present and the site is in use. In 1997, a 680 gallon heating oil UST and 290 cubic yards of impacted soil were removed. Confirmation sampling from the excavation indicated DRO remaining up to 8700 mg/kg DRO. Groundwater sampling of three wells in 1998 exhibited no exceedances of Table C cleanup levels. In the mid-1990s the Corps started working on the sites again under the Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) program. Site inspections were done around the former buildings to look for remaining underground fuel tanks and other potential contaminant sources. This site has been prioritized by the Amaknak Restoration Advisory Board Committee for FUDS sites, along with four other UST sites in Unalaska Valley.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
8/25/1999 | Site Characterization Report Approved | ADEC received the final report titled "1998 SI, RI, IRA Amaknak and Unalaska Islands" dated August 1999, by Jacobs Engineering. Seven samples were collected at this site however no results exceede cleanup levels. Two monitoring wells were installed downgradient from USTs 2667 and 2664 to determine flow direction, and no analytical samples exceeded cleanup levels. | Meghan Dooley |
6/5/2000 | CERCLA RI Report Approved | The Comprehensive Remedial Investigation Report was received. This document discusses the field activities and results from 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. Activities included site investigations (SI), Interim Removal actions (IRA) and Remedial Investigations (RI). These various activities were performed at 56 sites throughout the entire Amaknak/Unalaska FUDS. Sampling was conducted to determine both site-specific as well as background levels of contaminants of concern. 93 USTs, 1 AST, associated piping, and 230 drums, contaminated liquid, sludge, and soil were removed during the IRA. Soil borings were drilled, monitoring wells installed and samples were taken to determine type and extent of contamination. Where appropriate a Method Three ACL was calculated. 31 sites are recommended for no further action (NFA) and 25 sites were recommended for further remedial action. Additional groundwater monitoring is recommended for this site as well as implementation of institutional controls for soil removal. | Meghan Dooley |

6/10/2005 | Update or Other Action | File number issued 2542.38.023. | Aggie Blandford |
6/18/2008 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ranking with ETM completed. | Jill Taylor |
9/14/2010 | CERCLA Proposed Plan | ADEC received the draft final Proposed Plan #7 addressing Unalaska Valley Management Area 11. The plan recommends Alternative 2 (Corrective Action Complete/Cleanup Complete with ICs) for UST 2664. Remaining DRO is confined to beneath the building foundation and does not appear to be migrating to groundwater or affecting the municipal monitoring well. DRO concentrations do not exceed the inhalation levels and the site does not pose an dunacceptable risk to human health or the environment. Residual contamination may require further action if the building conditions change. | Meghan Dooley |
11/9/2021 | Update or Other Action | Site is being prioritized in the Amaknak Restoration Advisory Board, along with several other UST sites in Unalaska Valley. DRO exceeds MTGW and ingestion CULs. Current site use is industrial (C&G LLC yard). As of the November RAB meeting, the recommended path forward at this site is sampling of the groundwater at two wells to gauge current site conditions and if institutional controls will be effective. | Cascade Galasso-Irish |
4/24/2023 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Bulk action entry for Unalaska Valley UST sites: on this date, DEC received and approved the Final Work Plan - CON/HTRW Limited Removal Action Unalaska Valley Amaknak FUDS - F10AK0841-13, Unalaska, Alaska Dated April 7, 2023. The fieldwork will consist of a combination of drilling, excavation, soil sampling, groundwater sampling, and surface water sampling, in addition to an optional task of drafting environmental covenants for select properties. | Cascade Galasso-Irish |
1/25/2024 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Bulk action entry for review of the Draft Restoration Summary Report Containerized Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste, Amaknak Formerly Used Defense Sites, recommending closure at 53 sites. DEC received the draft summary report on April 2023, and provided comments on June 2023. On January 15, 2024, FUDS submitted a final summary report. Comment resolution has not been performed and is not complete. Further coordination is necessary with FUDS. | Cascade Galasso-Irish |
