Problems/Comments
The former building 2267 barracks foundation is located off Lear Road about 930 feet east of Broadway Avenue. Tank A was a 680 gallon heating oil tank, Tank B 300 gallons. Six cubic yards of impacted soil was removed down to bedrock. Confirmation sampling indicated DRO remaining up to 3800 mg/kg at bedrock. Update 11/2021 - Site is being prioritized in the Amaknak Restoration Advisory Board, along with several other UST sites in Unalaska Valley. Site is located at a private residence and underlaid by fractured bedrock.

6/5/2000 | CERCLA RI Report Approved | The Comprehensive Remedial Investigation Report was received. This document discusses the field activities and results from 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. Activities included site investigations (SI), Interim Removal actions (IRA) and Remedial Investigations (RI). These various activities were performed at 56 sites throughout the entire Amaknak/Unalaska FUDS. Sampling was conducted to determine both site-specific as well as background levels of contaminants of concern. 93 USTs, 1 AST, associated piping, and 230 drums, contaminated liquid, sludge, and soil were removed during the IRA. Soil borings were drilled, monitoring wells installed and samples were taken to determine type and extent of contamination. Where appropriate a Method Three ACL was calculated. 31 sites are recommended for no further action (NFA) and 25 sites were recommended for further remedial action. Two USTs and associated POL contaminated soil were removed from the site. Soil samples indicated DRO above migration to groundwater cleanup levels. Further action is necessary including excavation, confirmation sampling, TOC sampling for Method 3 calculations, and installation of a test pit to groundwater or bedrock to analyze groundwater according to surface water standards. | Meghan Dooley |

9/14/2010 | CERCLA Proposed Plan | ADEC received the draft final Proposed Plan #7 addressing Unalaska Valley Management Area 11. The plan recommends Alternative 2 (Corrective Action Complete/Cleanup Complete with ICs) for UST 2766 A and B. Remaining DRO is minimal and isolated near the building foundation. The source has been removed to the extent practicable. Remaining downgradient contamination does not exceed the ingestion or inhalation cleanup levels and may not be FUDS eligible. | Meghan Dooley |
9/12/2019 | Update or Other Action | Site location was updated on this date. Coordinates for this site are used to determine the presence and position of the site on BLM’s ANCSA Conveyed Land web map. | Rebekah Reams |
11/9/2021 | Update or Other Action | Site is being prioritized under the Amaknak Restoration Advisory Board, along with several other UST sites in the Unalaska Valley. As of the November RAB meeting, soil concentrations exceed MTG and are below inhalation and ingestion. Additional soil and/or groundwater sampling may not be feasible due to the site being in a residential area and underlaid by fractured bedrock. A historical records review will be performed by FUDs to demonstrate if the site is completely underlaid by bedrock, and if contamination remaining on the site is de-minimus and can be closed without institutional controls. | Cascade Galasso-Irish |
4/24/2023 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Bulk action entry for Unalaska Valley UST sites: on this date, DEC received and approved the Final Work Plan - CON/HTRW Limited Removal Action Unalaska Valley Amaknak FUDS - F10AK0841-13, Unalaska, Alaska Dated April 7, 2023. The fieldwork will consist of a combination of drilling, excavation, soil sampling, groundwater sampling, and surface water sampling, in addition to an optional task of drafting environmental covenants for select properties. | Cascade Galasso-Irish |
1/25/2024 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Bulk action entry for review of the Draft Restoration Summary Report Containerized Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste, Amaknak Formerly Used Defense Sites, recommending closure at 53 sites. DEC received the draft summary report on April 2023, and provided comments on June 2023. On January 15, 2024, FUDS submitted a final summary report. Comment resolution has not been performed and is not complete. Further coordination is necessary with FUDS. | Cascade Galasso-Irish |
