Problems/Comments
A strong diesel odor was detected at this location during the installation of new Village telephone lines. In addition, adjacent to the former Bettles TACAN site, a wetland that lies downgradient had a visible sheen on the surface of the ponded area. There is no reference to a previous site investigation of the TACAN site prior to this report. The site investigation was conducted on July 11, 1997. In the report, there was some mention that some of the waste from this site could have been bulldozed to the northern boundaries of the clear zone on the northern end of the airstrip. The source of the latitude and longitude data is from the EG&G report.

8/13/2003 | Update or Other Action | A draft work plan and SAP was recieved for soil sampling and monitoring well installation and groundwater sampling. Comments were provided. | Debra Caillouet |
4/27/2004 | Cleanup Level(s) Approved | A letter was sent to the NALEMP Program Manager,Evansville Tribal Council stating: based on all the site characterization data provided, we have determined the Arctic Zone Method 2 soil cleanup levels (12,500 mg/kg diesel range organics (DRO)) are applicable. The highest DRO levels found in soil were 4,000 mg/kg. Therefore, we cannot require further cleanup at the site. | John Halverson |
6/28/2004 | Update or Other Action | File number assigned 890.38.015; stored temporarily with New Bettles Airstrip and Old Town Bettles Drums. | Sarah Cunningham |
9/14/2004 | Cleanup Plan Approved | A tech memo was reviewed and approved for the abandonment of the monitoring well in the gravel pad and to remove impacted soils around TP17 | Debra Caillouet |
1/9/2007 | Conditional Closure Approved | The TACAN site has diesel range organics of 4000 mg/kg remaining in the pad, which is above the most stringent cleanup level but is below the human health risk-based level. It has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and no further remedial action is required. As noted in your letter of December 14, 2006, there is a restriction on excavation of soil containing diesel range organics above 250 mg/Kg. Approval for transport or disposal of the subject soil is required under 18 AAC 75.325(i). The placement of any contaminated soil into surface water or at a location where any runoff or leachate could cause a violation of water quality standards is prohibited. An institutional control in the form of an ADEC database entry will identify the nature and extent of the contamination remaining on the site. This determination is based on current information. Additional investigation and/or cleanup action may be necessary in the future if new information indicates there is hazardous substance contamination at this site that may pose a risk to human health and the environment. | Debra Caillouet |
11/5/2010 | Institutional Control Record Removed | Institutional Controls have been removed. Based upon the current guidance this site meets the requirements for a Cleanup Complete status. | Debra Caillouet |
