Problems/Comments
In 1999 four underground heating oil storage tanks were decommissioned at the Glacier Bay Lodge. Two 3,000-gallon tanks were removed and the remaining tanks, one 3,000-gallon and one 7,500-gallon, were closed in place. Confirmation sample results from the excavations are below Method Two, Tables B1 and B2, migration to groundwater cleanup levels for diesel range organics and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes. Approximately 300 cubic yards of petroleum contaminated soil was generated during these decommissioning activities. In 2006 a 1,000-gallon heating oil AST and associated piping servicing the boilers in the staff quarters at the Glacier Bay Lodge administrative area was removed and replaced with a new AST. Contamination was encountered during removal of the fuel lines and approximately 3 cubic yards of impacted soil was removed and stockpiled on site.

12/5/2005 | Update or Other Action | File Review. Soil incorporated into Bartlett Cove road project. Review of file shows confirmational soil excavation samples to meet the strictest Method One cleanup standards for DRO and BTEX compounds. Lodge is about 10 feet above high tide line. Water is supplied from an upgradient surfacewater source approximately 1.0 mile away from lodge. Will contact Park Service staff and recommend final closure of the site as originally proposed in 1999. | Mike Jaynes |
6/13/2008 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ETM ranking complete except for GW ingestion pathway - the source of drinking water for Bartlett Cove and the potential existence of GW wells in the area must be confirmed. Site closure recommended if GW is not used near the site. | Daniel Fremgen |
1/13/2009 | Update or Other Action | Groundwater verified not to be a source of drinking water at site. Alder Creek, a surface water body upgradient of the Lodge, is used. ETM edited to reflect this info. All soil samples well below cleanup levels. NFA should be issued for this site. | Daniel Fremgen |
4/5/2010 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 78868 name: AST at staff quarters | Melody Debenham |
8/11/2010 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | The cleanup actions to date have served to excavate and adequately remove contaminated soil associated with the decommissioning of 4 USTs at the Glacier Bay Lodge area in 1999 and the removal of one heating oil AST at the administrative area in 2006. Based on the information available, no further assessment or cleanup action is required. | Melody Debenham |
