Problems/Comments

Diesel contaminated soil was discovered during excavation for a water and sewer project. Contamination resulted from a diesel pump leak. North Slope Borough secured the site so that the residents of Point Hope will not be exposed to contaminants while a cleanup plan is developed. Lots 2 and 9 of Townsite Block 8.

5/23/2008 Institutional Control Record Established There is contamination remaining above established cleanup levels at the Point Hope Tuttu Street Trench, but ADEC has determined there is no unacceptable risk to human health or the environment, and this site will be conditionally closed. This decision is subject to the following conditions: 1. A “Notice of Residual Contamination” will be recorded on the ADEC database to document residual contamination remaining on site above the most stringent ADEC cleanup levels. 2. In accordance with 18 AAC 75.370(b) any proposal to transport soil off-site requires ADEC approval. 3. Soil containing residual contamination may not be placed in surface water or other environmentally sensitive areas. Bill O'Connell
5/23/2008 Conditional Closure Approved The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) reviewed the environmental records associated with the Point Hope Tuttu Street Trench. This site had been contaminated by the release of a hazardous substance; however, based on the information provided to date, ADEC has determined that no further remedial action is required, and that the Point Hope Tuttu Street Trench can be closed subject to the conditions outlined in the Record of Decision. The hazardous substance contamination has been adequately addressed and does not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment. Bill O'Connell
