Problems/Comments

On December 10, 1998, a release of JP-4 fuel occurred south of the JP-4 dispensing building near the eastern edge of PS6. Contaminated soil was excavated except under the fuel dispensing building foundation. Sampling revealed benzene impacted soil above the ADEC Method 2 cleanup level on the excavation floor and benzene and DRO impacted soil above the Method 2 cleanup levels immediately adjacent to the fuel dispenser building. Release estimated to be 20 gallons in volume. Note: this site is co-located with: Alyeska PS 06 JP4 Fueling Facility; Hazard ID: 1437; File Number:330.38.075. Groundwater monitoring in the area being conducted and reported under 330.38.007 PS 06 Leach Field/Fuel Island site. PS 06 hauls its water from a source 5 miles away. Previously there was a drinking water well at PS 06 that was reported to have a depth to static groundwater level of more than 600 feet bgs.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
4/10/2000 Update or Other Action Received Pump Station 6 Jet Shed Interim Removal Action and Assessment Report. 20-25 cubic yards removed (July 30-31 1999) using hand tools and confirmation samples collected (August 5 1999). These 4 samples (1 from along the excavation wall under the shed and 3 excavation floor samples) and a duplicate were analyzed for DRO and BTEX. The excavation wall sample (and its duplicate) had benzene (0.15 and 0.05 mg/kg) and DRO (950 and 660 mg/kg) concentrations above cleanup levels. One floor sample (under piping elbow) had a benzene concentration of 0.05 mg/kg (above migration to groundwater cleanup in under 40-inch zone) - all other results below cleanup levels.
