Problems/Comments

Updated May 7, 2018: Quarters Building 100 was part of the FAA housing area in Valdez, Alaska. The site was referred to as the “FAA Trailer Park”. The former FAA buildings have been demolished or removed and the area is now part of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Housing area. Former Building 100 was located at the corner of Hanagita Street and Anchor Crest Street. A site visit was conducted in 1995 by the USCG and FAA to inspect the property. Stained soil associated with a UST #1 (USCG #1) was identified at the former FAA Building 100 location. In 2000, UST USCG #1 was removed as part of a joint FAA/USCG effort. During the removal effort, approximately 35 cubic yards (CY) of contaminated soil was excavated and stockpiled onsite. The excavation was terminated at approximately 14 feet below ground surface (bgs). DRO was observed in both soil samples collected from the base of the excavation, with concentrations of 930 and 990 mg/kg.

2/22/2019 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued CLEANUP COMPLETE DETERMINATION: The source of contamination was a 500-gallon UST, which was removed in 1999. Confirmation samples taken after the tank removal (13.5 ft bgs) in 1999 yielded DRO concentrations of 930 and 990 mg/kg. In 2018, FAA conducted a remedial investigation to delineate any remaining contamination in soil and groundwater. Samples were analyzed for GRO, DRO, RRO, BTEX and PAHs. For soil, there was only one slight exceedance (0.04 mg/kg) of the cleanup level (0.038 mg/kg) was detected for naphthalene, at 31 feet bgs. Groundwater was either non-detect or below cleanup levels. Based on a review of the environmental record, ADEC has determined that residual contaminant concentrations meet the human health cumulative risk criteria for residential land use. This site will receive a “Cleanup Complete” designation on the Contaminated Sites Database. Jamie McKellar
