Problems/Comments
Two separate areas of potential concern have been identified. The first is the beach landing area, which includes ~30 to 50 abandoned and rusted drums. The second is the main site, which includes scattered building debris (solid waste) and scrap metal including drums and an abandoned tank. Petroleum, DRO - aliphatics. This site was used by the Navy during WWII as a radar and weather station between 1943 and 1945. It was composed of a wood frame operations building, three quonset huts and a small generator shed. The site is within the Aleutian Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. There is a major sea lion rookery on the SE end of the island. The Corps of Engineers evaluated this site under the formerly used defense site program in 1989 and determined no further action was needed based on a lack of hazardous substances or debris. In 1997 the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association contacted the Corps and reported that a Sand Point resident recalled the Navy bulldozing debris and munitions into pits on the island.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
4/25/1998 | Preliminary Assessment Approved | EPA published a PA/SI report for the site and determined no further action was necessary under the Superfund program. It did document the presence of petroleum contamination in a few areas and debris/solid waste. | John Halverson |
12/1/1999 | Update or Other Action | ADEC reviewed and commented on a draft site inspection report, dated October 1999, prepared by Jacobs Engineering for the Army Corps of Engineers. It documented scattered building debris, drums and an old fuel tank (empty), all of which are solid waste. Field screening and limited laboratory analyses indicate diesel range organics in soil. The contractor estimated ~20 cubic yards of DRO contaminated soil is present at the main site. It recommended no further action at the beach landing site. The draft did not address the solid waste issues. | John Halverson |
12/2/1999 | Site Added to Database | Petroleum. | John Halverson |
