Problems/Comments
A 2000 site assessment by Oasis identified two 10,0000 gallon vertical tanks, one 10,000 gallon railroad tank car, and one 20,000 gallon vertical tank remaining at the site. The 20,000 gallon tank has never been used to store fuel and was empty. A cistern containing fuel-contaminated water and several drums of unknown content also need to be addressed. A 1992 gasoline spill, inappropriate containment, and chronic leaks during fuel transfers are the suspected cause of the contamination. Residents identified this site in 2000 as a top priority for characterization and cleanup. Obvious staining has been noted in the soil, and analytical sampling reported diesel range organics (DRO) present up to 1,330 mg/kg. Seeping of oil has been noted by residents during periods of high rainfall or flooding. The site is within 500 feet of the regulated drinking water well serving this village. The well is west of the site, drainage is typically to the southwest and towards the Yukon River.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
1/7/1992 | Update or Other Action | A spill of 4,000 to 7,000 gallons was reported. Spill occurred due to the failure of a flexible piping connection between a stationary 10,000 gallon railroad tanker car and a 10,000 gallon vertical tank. Crews attempted to pump the spilled gasoline into several 1,500 gallon tanks. The amount recovered is unknown. Added to database in 2007 to reflect administrative file. | Shannon Oelkers |

12/15/2000 | Update or Other Action | Site assessment of Former Kaltag Bulk Storage Co-Op Tank Farm conducted by Oasis. The tank farm lot had tanks from the Kaltag Cooperative Industries, the Kaltag Fisherman's Association, and the City of Kaltag. Combined fuel storage capacity of the tank farm totaled 80,000 gallons. Both gasoline and diesel heating oil were stored on-site. Liner is degraded and not functional. There is evidence of abandoned fuel lines between the tank farm and the barge fill point. Steady leaks were observed at the fuel header while in operation. Three tanks on site hold water contaminated with fuel. One 20,000 gallon upright tank has never been used and is empty. Added to database in 2007 to reflect administrative file. | Shannon Oelkers |
