Problems/Comments
Nike Site Jig ("Site D") was part of the Nike Hercules guided missile air defense system deployed in 1959 to protect Alaskan military bases and cities. The site was inactivated in 1970 and the land subsequently obtained by the Cook Inlet Regional Corporation as part of ANCSA. The Launch Control Area is currently leased by Alaska Explosives Limited for the manufacture and storage of explosives. No structures remain at the Battery Control Area, other than a closed on-site landfill. The facility is located off Johnson Road from the Richardson Highway in Salcha. The US Army Corps of Engineers conducted surface and subsurface sampling in 1985 under the Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) program. The Corps documented an estimated 30-45 cubic yards of PCB contaminated soil in addition to numerous confirmed incidental releases of petroleum in the Battery and Launch Control Areas. Site demolition and restoration was completed in 1986. Non-hazardous debris was placed into an on-site landfill, although the 1985 sampling documented chlorinated solvent contamination at the landfill, indicating that it may have received chemicals and hazardous wastes before being permitted.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
10/19/1999 | Interim Removal Action Approved | Comments sent to RP regarding Draft Declaration of No Further Action Decision and No Further Action Report. | Rielle Markey |
3/28/2001 | Site Added to Database | PCBs suspected, petroleum release confirmed. | Bruce Wanstall |
3/28/2001 | Site Ranked Using the AHRM | Preliminary ranking. Incidental releases of petroleum confirmed in 1985 EA; PCB release estimation only - not confirmed. | Bruce Wanstall |
7/10/2002 | GIS Position Updated | Changed the Latitude, Longitude, Method Accuracy, Accuracy and Unit fields. | Heather Goldman |
8/22/2002 | Update or Other Action | Nike Love and Jig FUD Sites (Buck) Staff reviewed and sent comments on No Further Action Reports for these two sites. There are significant data gaps in the reports. Staff requested the Corp revise the documents and provide additional information, before DEC determines if site closure is appropriate. | Patrice Buck |
8/11/2004 | Update or Other Action | DEC received a response to the comment letter sent on August 22, 2002 from the Army Corps of Engineers. | Colin Craven |
7/29/2005 | Update or Other Action | DEC received a request for site closure from the Army Corps by submission of a No Further Action Report. The report is similar to previous drafts found in the DEC files, but includes extra sampling data recently discovered from the Army Corps records. | Colin Craven |
11/28/2005 | Update or Other Action | DEC reviewed the Army Corps of Engineers report requesting closure for Nike Site Jig. Two sampling events were conducted at the site in 1985 prior to site demolition. Previous versions of the report did not include information from both these investigations, as additional documentation was only recently found, although significant data gaps still remain. Since the site demolition in 1986, several homes have been built in close proximity to the former facility, including the closed on-site landfill. DEC has requested further information about water sources for these residences, and will discuss the possibility of a groundwater investigation with the Army Corps. Contaminants of concern include chlorinated solvents (trichloroethene and 1,1,1-trichloroethane) detected above Method 2 cleanup levels in the surface soils, the majority of which were detected within the on-site landfill. | Colin Craven |
4/26/2016 | Update or Other Action | This site is on the list of FUDS projects under DSMOA. Site is reassigned to the project manager for NIKE site LOVE for further action and follow up. Further cleanup is required at the disposal pits, and coordination with private party cleanup at former bunker is also required. | Fred Vreeman |
