Problems/Comments

A single drum was reported by a resident to be present in a slough near the Seaplane Base. The drum appeared to be similar to other FUDS-eligible drums observed in the area. One surface water sample and one sediment sample were collected in 2000. A sheen came to the surface when the bottom layers were disturbed, and the sediment sample had a strong odor. DRO in the detected in the sediment sample at 1700 mg/kg. Location is north of Point Carrew Road, about 1.5 miles west of Engineer's Road. Latitude and longitude is for the Yakutat Seaplane Base.

1/16/2008 Update or Other Action ADEC staff attended a Restoration Advisory Board meeting in Yakutat to discuss the status of various contaminated sites associated with the Yakutat AFB. Discussions at the RAB meeting included the results from the 2007 investigations including the Military Munitions Respons Program work and research; Avgas pipeline removal work scheduled for the upcoming summer; discussions concerning the Feasibility Study that is scheduled to be conducted in upcoming years; and the work to be conducted at the Ocean Cape Radio Relay Station in the NALEMP program. 9/30/2009 Update or Other Action ADEC staff signed a CON/HTRW project closeout report fort he Formerly Used Defense Sites associated with the Yakutat Air Base. The State of Alaska, through the Department of Environmental Conservation concurs with this USACE project closure. The decision may be reviewed or modified in the future if information becomes available that indicates the presence oif military CON/HTRW that may cause unacceptable risk to human health or the environment. 10/22/2010 CERCLA FS Contaminated Sites Staff submitted a letter to the US Army Corps of Engineers approving the FInal Version of the Feasibility Study Report. The report details the amount of money and effort that cleanup wil require for each of the impacted sites at the Yakutat former Naval Air Facility. 9/9/2021 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed a review of the environmental records associated with the Yakutat Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) Area of Concern (AOC) G4 – Seaplane Base Slough located north of Point Carrew Road, approximately 0.5 miles from the Point Carrew (Ocean Cape) Road junction and south of Monti Bay. Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and no further remedial action will be required unless new information becomes available that indicates residual contaminants may pose an unacceptable risk.
