Long Term Monitoring Complete |
During the 2002 SWMP, one sample was collected from a single well and contamination was below cleanup levels for VOCs and metals. During previous sampling events in 1993, 1994, and 1996, there were hits of lead above the cleanup levels. It was thought that the lead exceedences (which only occurred in 1994 sampling event) were due to a sampling method that yielded highly turbid samples. Subsequent sampling methods (low-flow) have yielded low metals concentrations (below the MCL). |

Meeting or Teleconference Held |
Staff attended a meeting with Air Force and EPA personnel to resolve comments on the draft Eielson Five-Year Review. Issues with the document included event-driven groundwater sampling at several contaminated sites, which we denied pending further clarification of the process, and closing numerous sites under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), but keeping them open under the State until 18 AAC 75 diesel range organic cleanup levels are met. |

Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other |
During landfill inspection, a significant amount of debris was observed on the landfill surface.
Debris consisted of rusted metal, old drums, glass bottles and cans, tires, household wastes, and military items. It did not appear that the debris was impacting Piledriver Slough, but some debris was observed in the older growth trees near that area.

USAF, EPA and DEC remedial project managers visited the site to evaluate current conditions. Soil and groundwater at the site was sampled during summer and fall of 2015 under an approved work plan; the sample locations were clearly marked during this site visit, and had been appropriately filled. Also apparent at the site were the brushed transects used to complete a geophysical survey of buried debris during the summer and fall of 2015. |

CERCLA RI Plan Approved |
EPA and DEC provided a joint approval for the Final Supplemental Remedial Investigation Work Plan Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska (September 2022). The scope of this Supplemental RI is to address current data gaps at the CERCLA source areas on Eielson AFB. The data gaps are generally related to the incomplete characterization of site contaminants under the 2015-2021 Performance Based Remediation (PBR) and emerging contaminants identified since the 2015-2021 PBR. |

On this date DEC approved the Draft Final Landfill Survey Desktop Investigation Report, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, September 2025. The report summarizes the findings of a desktop
investigation performed for seven landfill sites at Eielson Air Force Base (LF001, LF002, LF003,
LF004, LF005, LF006, and LF007). The purpose of the investigation was to determine regulation applicability based on current applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements, historical landfill extents, identify on-site and offsite sources of potential contamination and receptors, and identify contaminants of concern. Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other |
DEC received the Final Desktop Investigation Report, Eielson Air Force Base Landfill Survey, dated October 2025 on this date. A desktop investigation was performed for seven landfill (LF) sites at Eielson Air Force Base (LF001, LF002, LF003, LF004, LF005, LF006, and LF007) to determine regulation applicability based on current applicable or relevant and appropriate requirements, conduct a records search and photograph interpretation for historical landfill extents, identify on-site and offsite sources of potential contamination and receptors, and identify contaminants of
concern (COCs).
Historical documents were searched to determine previous investigations conducted at the seven landfills, regulatory applicability, and reported data gaps related to landfill extents, presence/absence of landfill caps, and landfill cap thicknesses. Historical imagery obtained from public and commercial sources and the Air Force Civil Engineer Center was examined to determine land use changes at the landfill sites and estimate the maximum extent of the landfills. |
