Problems/Comments
Phase II SA identified GRO contaminated soils near 500-gallon AST, extent of soil contamination not determined, depth estimated to be several feet above river. Water from on-site sand point drinking water well that draws from 20 feet below ground surface had elevated levels of Lead (1.14ppm) and Arsenic (0.188), as well as DRO (0.37 ppm). GRO non-detectable in all water samples. Airfield Tank Farm (three 2,000 gallon tanks) and heating oil UST (500 gallon) area soils not tested in Phase II Site Assessment.

11/28/2000 | Site Added to Database | Based on limited Phase II Site Assessment funded by Small Business Administration. | Bruce Wanstall |
11/30/2000 | Site Ranked Using the AHRM | Preliminary ranking. Site presently unoccupied. | Bruce Wanstall |
3/29/2001 | Update or Other Action | No contact from RP as of this time. | Mike Jaynes |
5/8/2001 | Update or Other Action | Spoke with Bernie Williams, new owner about consulting firms able to deal with the site. Referred Bernie to our qualified contractors list and spoke at length what to look for, etc. | Mike Jaynes |
4/27/2004 | Update or Other Action | Spoke with Craig McCauley of Restoration Science. Said approx 50 cubic yards of GRO contaminated soil was excavated and stockpiled. Stockpiled soil was recently sampled and found to be below levels of concern. Report should be in the mail today and will indicate site closure. | Mike Jaynes |
6/4/2004 | Update or Other Action | Reviewed Landfarmed soil closure report from Lucas Gamble at Restoration Science. Soils appear to meet closure requirements. Drafted letter located at G:\SPAR\CS\Contaminated Site Files (38)\2268 Deshka River\2268.38.002 Deshka River Lodge\Deshka River Lodge Landfarm Soil Closure.doc. Phoned and left messages for both owner of lodge and Restoration science stating intention to close landfarmed soils, but asked for an update of additional site work to be performed prior to release of letter. Site has additional contamination issues that need to be addressed. Owner of lodge has been very cooperative and is trying to work on site in a piece by piece fashion. | Mike Jaynes |
7/12/2013 | Potentially Responsible Party/State Interest Letter | Katrina Chambon | |
7/24/2013 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | Discussion with RP regarding work that needs to be conducted at the site. CSP requests a work plan for the decommissioning of the groundwater monitoring wells. | Katrina Chambon |
5/13/2014 | Update or Other Action | Transferred to Danielle Duncan in Juneau 5-13-2014 | Annie Ariel |
6/9/2014 | Update or Other Action | Spoke with RP and he is having the monitoring well decommissioned by a professional per 7/24/13 communication. I inquired about buried debris (near pond) and RP informed me that there had been three major floods and that he didn't know that any of it was still onsite. In addition, the 2001 Site Assessment indicated that petroleum hydrocarbons, metals, VOCs, PCB, and pesticide contamination is not present in association with the pond area. I requested that the drinking water for the lodge be tested or that documentation that the drinking water quality is being monitored be submitted prior to closure in addition to documentation of the decommissioning of the monitoring wells. | Danielle Duncan |
9/30/2014 | Update or Other Action | Lodge has closed but drinking water well will not be sampled until next summer. RP has provided me verification of the decommissioning of the monitoring wells. | Danielle Duncan |
5/29/2015 | Update or Other Action | Spoke to RP, should have a work plan to sample the drinking water well next week. | Danielle Duncan |
6/3/2015 | Update or Other Action | Rec'd voicemail from RP - the drinking water has been tested and I should have lab results soon. | Danielle Duncan |
6/16/2015 | Update or Other Action | Rec'd drinking water test results, but multiple problems: the water was not sampled by an environmental professional and was only tested for nitrite, As, and coliform. Did not receive a work plan for the work as requested and did not get hydrocarbon analyses as requested, however, requests were made by telephone. However, the PRP letter and cleanup process handout makes these obligations clear. | Danielle Duncan |
7/16/2015 | Update or Other Action | Sent request for a drinking water well sample: Please have an environmental professional/consultant sample your drinking water well within 30 days and have the following laboratory analyses completed on the sample: Gasoline Range Organics – Method AK 101 Diesel Range Organics – Method AK 102 BTEX – EPA 8021B or 8260C PAHs – EPA 8310 Metals – EPA 6010C or 6020A Please have the consultant submit the chain-of-custody, a brief report, and original data report from the laboratory for my review. | Danielle Duncan |
7/16/2015 | Update or Other Action | Rec'd notice today from the RP that the lodge has been closed since the end of June and that the water system has been drained and winterized so obtaining a water sample is impossible until next season. | Danielle Duncan |
7/16/2015 | Update or Other Action | Rec'd notice today from the RP that the lodge has been closed since the end of June and that the water system has been drained and winterized so obtaining a water sample is impossible until next season. We will plan on sampling the water first thing next season. | Danielle Duncan |
8/17/2015 | Update or Other Action | Rec'd SGS lab report of drinking water well sample this date. The sample and a trip blank were analyzed for 8270 PAH, AK 101 & 102, and SW 6020A Metals. All results non-detect except for barium detected at 92.7 ug/L. | Danielle Duncan |
8/28/2015 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | Danielle Duncan |
Contaminant Information
Name | Level Description | Media | Comments |
---|---|---|---|
Benzene | > Table C | Groundwater | For groundwater monitoring well # 2 of 6, the last groundwater data collected in July 2002 documented a benzene concentration of 0.0058 mg/L. The location of well #1 may also have residual benzene contamination. However, it is likely that this contamination has naturally attenuated to below ADEC cleanup levels due to elimination of the source soil and high groundwater flux. |
GRO | Between Method 2 Migration to Groundwater and Human Health/Ingestion/Inhalation | Soil | There may be GRO impacted soil in the footprint of the former UST and former tank farm. |
