Problems/Comments
This tank farm is located approximately 200 feet southeast of the Anvik School, near the airstrip. The tank farm consists of three riveted steel rail tank cars with the wheels removed situated within a plastic lined dike (total capacity 21,126 gallons). The inside of the dike was covered with 2-6 inches of ice at the time of the visit. The tanks appeared to be empty. Evidence of overfilling was apparent on the three tanks. A strong diesel odor was noted near the rear of the middle tank car. According to Robert Walker, approximately 3000 gallons of fuel were spilled at this tank farm when a valve was inadvertently left open. It is not clear whether the spill was contained inside the dike. A soil sample collected from outside of the dike near a cam lock fitting contained 49,400 mg/kg DRO and 635 mg/kg GRO.

8/31/2009 | Site Characterization Workplan Approved | Reviewed work plan for Site Characterization at Anvik Iditarod Area School Former Tank Farm. Ten test pits will be excavated and soil samples will be collected in an effort to delienate the nature and extent of petroelum impacts at the site. If feasible, three wellpoints will be installed and sampled, potentially impacted drinking water wells will be sampled, and surface water samples will be collected if petroleum imnpacts are apparent. | Bill O'Connell |
12/3/2009 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Reviewed the 2009 Site Characterization Report for the Anvik Iditarod Area School. Only 7 of the scheduled 10 test pits were required to characterize the nature and extent of contamination at the former tank farm. The test pits were placed around the perimeter of the tank farm to evaluate the potential migration of contaminants from the tank farm. The liner material inside the tank pit was intact, and appears to have worked to keep fuel spills inside the lined area, as no contamination was detected in any of the test pits. One drinking water sample was collected from the well at the school and did not contain detectable concentrations of any contaminants. | Bill O'Connell |
1/14/2010 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 74341 ASTs. | Bill O'Connell |
4/9/2010 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed a review of the environmental records associated with Anvik Iditarod Area School Former Tank Farm located in Anvik, Alaska. Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and this site will be closed. | Bill O'Connell |
