Problems/Comments

This is the location of the former tank farm that serviced the Village Safe Water Plant (Washeteria). Two ASTs are located at this site. One horizontal AST (capacity of 500 gallons) is located within a diked, lined tank farm and is on a wooden, elevated stand. A new horizontal tank (capacity of 2,000 gallons) is located outside and adjacent to the tank farm, to the west. This tank rests on a metal stand. Soil staining was observed to the north and east of the 2,000-gallon AST, as well as on the northern side of the tank farm, along the western side. Sheen on the surface water surrounding the area was also observed. The Washeteria drinking water well is located approximately 100 feet east. A soil sample taken near the 500-gallon AST had a DRO level of up to 2,600 mg/kg.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
12/13/2002 Site Added to Database DRO contamination. Deborah Williams
3/1/2004 Update or Other Action With loss of TAPL funding, ADEC will no longer be able to assist with assessment and remediation at this site. Mike Jaynes
7/14/2004 Update or Other Action File number changed from 2452.42.002 to 2452.38.002 Sarah Cunningham
1/8/2008 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Initial ranking with ETM completed. Keather McLoone
2/12/2008 Potentially Responsible Party/State Interest Letter Sent PRP letter. Keather McLoone
4/1/2008 Update or Other Action Spoke with compliance officer in DEC drinking water program regarding concerns about drinking water as the electric plant (very close to washeteria well) and washeteria itself both a contaminated site. Excavation of the soil in this area, which is virtually a wetland (boardwalks, very shallow to suficially expressed groundwater) may not be a good strategy for this site due to its likelihood of mobilizing the contamination. VOCs have not yet shown up in drinking water results - washeteria operates intermittently. Keather McLoone
4/4/2008 Update or Other Action Sent letter to Tuntutuliak Community Services Association requesting that the Washeteria well water be sampled for GRO, DRO, RRO. The rationale being that because this well is not currently being used that this information would serve as a monitoring well and once it is being used again, the DEC drinking water program will require it be sampled for 524.2. Received reply to letter redirecting to the Traditional Council. Status of public use of well still listed as inactive as of 7/30/08. Keather McLoone
5/8/2008 Update or Other Action Date of response letter from Deanna Paul of the Tuntutuliak Community Services Association stating that their understanding was that the spill was cleaned up. Of particular interest was confirmation that the washeteria had been closed down as of November 30, 2007. Keather McLoone
1/13/2010 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 74352 ASTs. Keather McLoone
5/17/2011 Update or Other Action CSP was contacted by Drinking Water Program regarding observations they made during a site visit they conducted to perform a sanitary survey. The main item of concern was that storage practices, such as 800 gallons of waste oil being stored along boardwalk between this site and the washeteria, presented an imminent threat to the well head located in this area. Later followup was done by PERP. Email documentation printed off for files. Keather McLoone
10/31/2014 Update or Other Action Checked status of Washeteria on Drinking Water Program's Drinking Water Watch weblink. Tuntutuliak Washeteria and Watering Point shows the Water System No. to be AK2271211 and status as currently active. The Monitoring Summary date is September 2013 and doesn't have a DWP staff contact name but showed that the last date of VOC sampling that would indicate impacts from petroleum was from September 2003. Followup with DWP indicated that they would be asked to get their VOC sampling up to date and it was communicated that this would be important to the CSP. Keather McLoone
2/24/2015 Update or Other Action No new information or change in site status. Keather McLoone
12/28/2015 Update or Other Action DEC Drinking Water Program has requested that Tuntutuliak test for VOCs in the drinking water wells. Will update when results of testing are received. Lisa Griswold
10/28/2016 Update or Other Action Review of DEC Drinking Water testing database indicates that VOC testing done in January 2016 on the drinking water wells did not contain Volatile Organic Compounds above 0.15 ug/L. Lisa Griswold
5/11/2017 Update or Other Action Site transferred to Rodman Lisa Griswold
5/10/2018 Workplan Requested Work plan requested, deadline is June 30, 2018. Amy Rodman
9/14/2018 Workplan Requested Work plan request letter mailed to RP via USPS First Class. Work plan due November 15. Amy Rodman
11/30/2020 Update or Other Action J. Fix assigned as new project manager. Lisa Krebs-Barsis
