Problems/Comments
This site is located on the western side of the western-most generator at the Electric Plant site. Based on discussions with Robert Enoch, an overfill of a 300-gallon AST occurred at this site in the spring during the mid-1980's, and several thousand gallons of fuel were spilled. The ground was reportedly frozen at the time and the village cleaned up the spill as much as possible. The AST at the site has no secondary containment. Soil staining was observed in the area underneath the tank. The nearest drinking water well is the Washeteria well which is located approximately 30 feet west of this 300-gallon tank. This site was to be addressed within the TAPL program. Kinak River also referred to as the Qinaq River
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
1/12/2001 | Update or Other Action | Receipt of Tuntutuliak Site Reconnaissance and Recommendation Report by BEESC. Investigation included two areas of the elelctric plant - the former tank farm and another area west of the western-most generator. This second area was in between the first area and nearby Washeteria and not specified in the ADEC RFP. At the first area - no sheen or surface staining observed. Peat to 6 inches and very shallow water table (up to 12 inches). Also notes Washeteria well ~ 100 feet west and its depth is a reported 180 ft bgs. One sample collected from this area was submitted to the lab and showed 182 mg/kg DRO, 7.54 mg/kg GRO and ND for BTEXs. The second area noted surface staining but no sheen. One sample and duplicate was collected from this area and submitted to the laboratory- duplicate sample contained 105,000 mg/kg DRO, 839 mg/kg GRO and 0.232 mg/kg benzene. Washeteria well ~30 feet west from this location. Runoff in area in the direction of the washeteria lagoon to the south. | Keather McLoone |

1/8/2008 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ranking with ETM completed. | Keather McLoone |
2/12/2008 | Potentially Responsible Party/State Interest Letter | Sent PRP letter. | Keather McLoone |
4/1/2008 | Update or Other Action | Spoke with compliance officer in DEC drinking water program regarding concerns about drinking water as the electric plant is very close to washeteria well. Excavation of the soil in this area, which is virtually a wetland (boardwalks, very shallow to surficially-expressed groundwater) may not be a good strategy for this site due to its likelihood of mobilizing the contamination. VOCs have not yet shown up in drinking water results - washeteria operates intermittently. | Keather McLoone |
1/13/2010 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 74353 AST overfill. | Keather McLoone |
5/17/2011 | Update or Other Action | CSP was contacted by Drinking Water Program regarding observations they made during a site visit they conducted to perform a sanitary survey. The main item of concern was that storage practices, such as 800 gallons of waste oil being stored along boardwalk between this site and the washeteria, presented an imminent threat to the well head located in this area. Later followup was done by PERP. Email documentation printed off for files. | Keather McLoone |
2/24/2015 | Update or Other Action | No new information or change in site status. | Keather McLoone |
12/28/2015 | Update or Other Action | DEC Drinking Water Program has requested that Tuntutuliak test for VOCs in the drinking water wells. Will update when results of testing are received. | Lisa Griswold |
10/28/2016 | Update or Other Action | Review of DEC Drinking Water testing database indicates that VOC testing done in January 2016 on the drinking water wells did not contain Volatile Organic Compounds above 0.15 ug/L. | Lisa Griswold |
5/11/2017 | Update or Other Action | Site transferred to Rodman | Lisa Griswold |
5/10/2018 | Workplan Requested | Work plan request letter mailed to RP via USPS Certified Mail. Work plan deadline is June 30, 2018 | Amy Rodman |
5/22/2019 | Workplan Requested | Work plan request letter mailed and emailed to RP. Work plan due June 30, 2019. | Amy Rodman |
