Problems/Comments

1992 Environmental Compliance Investigation found significant petroleum contamination in soils at Shop building and Tank Farm. 5 ASTs were removed from the Tank Farm by USAED in 1997 for DOD, no samples collected. 1999 EPA START identified Areas of Concern as former Tank Farm and Incinerator. Soil samples collected from the Tank Farm had TPH at 990ppm and trace levels of PAHs. Shop and tank Farm later characterized. FUDS Project Number F10AK0278.

5/10/2017 Site Characterization Report Approved ADEC approves the "Draft Groundwater Sampling Report, Investigation of Contaminated Groundwater" dated April 2017. This report concludes that at both the Building 605 and Tank Farm areas of concern, the groundwater moves inland during incoming high tide, and shoreward during outgoing low tide. There appears to be a hydralic divide between Building 605 and the lagoon, with the lagoon not tidally influenced. Groundwater sampling data shows DRO and naphthalene slightly above clean up levels in one well at Building 605, and all samples below cleanup levels at all wells near the Tank Farm. Kara Kusche
8/1/2018 Site Visit ADEC conducts regulatory oversight site visit. Field activities observed were in compliance with the approved work plan. Kara Kusche
9/13/2018 Update or Other Action ADEC has reviewed the records associated with the Shop (Building 605) and Tank Farm. ADEC cannot grant site closure for these areas because risk was calculated in the 2014 RI Remedial Report using an older version of the Hydrocarbon Risk Calculator that does not incorporate current cleanup levels. ADEC requests that updated calculations be submitted using an ADEC approved calculator so that the Shop and Tank Farm areas of concern can be evaluated for closure against current regulatory standards. Alternatively, additional soil and groundwater cleanup can be performed to reduce remaining contamination to meet cleanup levels. Kara Kusche
