Problems/Comments
Ordnance or ordnance-related problems. The SWMU 2 Candidate Site is located at the northeast corner of Clam Lagoon, north of downtown Adak. This area was identified as a candidate site based upon historical anecdotal information, some of which was provided by former EOD officers on Adak. This anecdotal information is described in detail in the report for the 1996 EOD ordnance survey conducted in the range areas at Adak. The SWMU 2 minefield was visually inspected during this survey. The area is located at the exit point of the Clam Lagoon spit. SWMU 2 was investigated again during the 1997 field season by SSPORTS. A single transect was used to investigate the area. An M2 series land mine was encountered 633 feet from the start point. Based on this find, the site was recommended for immediate remediation. The remediation of the site was completed the following year by SSPORTS. A 200 percent geophysical survey was conducted and 100 percent of the metallic debris was investigated and removed to a depth of 18 inches over the entire SWMU 2 area. The remedial activity located and disposed of training mines, service mines, and mine-related wastes which were found in this area along with mortars, Banglor torpedoes, and various pieces of OE scrap. Several large craters were noted by the field crews and it appears that this area was used for disposal of ordnance. Because remedial actions were completed in 1998 and environmental sampling was negative, NOFA was selected for the site in the OU B-1 ROD. Draft Close Out Report for Partial Delisting submitted for Department review on June 16. Comments were submitted to the Navy on August 16.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
4/15/2000 | Site Added to Database | Ordnance or ordnance-related problems. | Elim Yoon |
4/15/2000 | Update or Other Action | The Level I Screen is a framework intended to facilitate somewhat objective evaluation of subjective issues and information. The screen considers the ordnance characteristics of the site (i.e., type of ordnance and density) along with physical characteristics of the site (i.e., terrain and vegetation) to determine the qualitative risk associated and the general category of future action that may be needed at the site to minimize that risk (i.e., additional investigation, remedial action, or no action). The screen also incorporates evaluation of the strength of evidence upon which screening decisions are made to ensure that there is reasonable supporting data for the choices made at this stage of the process. | Elim Yoon |
12/10/2001 | Institutional Control Record Established | An Ordnance Awareness Program was selected as the main IC for OU B in the OU B Record of Decision. The program is maintained by the Navy. | Elim Yoon |

10/19/2004 | GIS Position Updated | Latitude and Longitude was derived using ArcGIS with either High Resolution Aerial Photography from the Navy with an up to 3 meters error, or line maps used in investigations combined with road layers, +/-25 feet accuracy. Metadata is as follows: Updated NAD 1983 State Plane Alaska 10 FIPS 5010 Feet; Projection: Lambert Conformal Conic; False Easting: 3280833.333333; False Northing: 0.000000; Central Meridian: -176.000000; Standard Parallel 1: 51.833333; Standard Parallel 2: 53.833333; Latitude of Origin: 51.000000; GCS North American 1983. | Jason Weigle |
10/21/2004 | Conditional Closure Approved | NOFA selected in OU B-1 ROD for this site. | Jason Weigle |
3/7/2005 | Update or Other Action | Added MRTS data, derived from ADNR and USGS range, township, and section data overlaid on lat/lon coordinates derived previously. Accuracy is equivalent to the lat/lon coordinates. MRTS information depicts the center point of range fans and target areas; actual target areas or fans may overlap several sections. | Jason Weigle |
