Problems/Comments
Ordnance or ordnance-related problems. This WWII Runway sites encompassed the area directly surrounding the two runways in downtown Adak and all associated structures such as taxiways and hangers. This area was identified based upon anecdotal information regarding the loading and unloading of munitions from planes and written historical documentation of a bomb fuzing line located along the east-west runway during World War II. The World War II Runway Ordnance Handling Area was investigated during the 1997 and 1998 field seasons as part of the Priority I, II, and III Areas of Adak. A small amount of ordnance (mostly small arms ammunition) was found in this area. RW-02 encompasses the remainder of the RW site surrounding the runways and taxiways. The area was identified as an AOPC based upon anecdotal information regarding the loading and unloading of munitions along the runway. In addition, there is written historical documentation that a bomb fuzing line was located along the runway during World War II. This area would have been used to arm (fuze) bombs before loading them onto planes. During the 1997 field investigation the areas to the south and east of the runways were investigated. Two .50 caliber projectiles were found, along with several JAU-22B CADS in the runway AOC. These finds are not inconsistent with the known historical use of the runway area. During the 1998 field season, the areas north and west of the runways were investigated. No significant finds were made during this investigation in this AOPC. NOFA was selected for the site in the OU B-1 ROD. Draft Close Out Report for Partial Delisting submitted for Department review on June 16. Comments were submitted to the Navy on August 16.
Action Information

|---|---|---|---|
| 4/15/2000 | Site Added to Database | Ordnance or ordnance-related problems. | Elim Yoon |
| 4/15/2000 | Update or Other Action | The Level I Screen is a framework intended to facilitate somewhat objective evaluation of subjective issues and information. The screen considers the ordnance characteristics of the site (i.e., type of ordnance and density) along with physical characteristics of the site (i.e., terrain and vegetation) to determine the qualitative risk associated and the general category of future action that may be needed at the site to minimize that risk (i.e., additional investigation, remedial action, or no action). The screen also incorporates evaluation of the strength of evidence upon which screening decisions are made to ensure that there is reasonable supporting data for the choices made at this stage of the process. | Elim Yoon |

| 10/19/2004 | GIS Position Updated | Latitude and Longitude was derived using ArcGIS with either High Resolution Aerial Photography from the Navy with an up to 3 meters error, or line maps used in investigations combined with road layers, +/-25 feet accuracy. Metadata is as follows: Updated NAD 1983 State Plane Alaska 10 FIPS 5010 Feet; Projection: Lambert Conformal Conic; False Easting: 3280833.333333; False Northing: 0.000000; Central Meridian: -176.000000; Standard Parallel 1: 51.833333; Standard Parallel 2: 53.833333; Latitude of Origin: 51.000000; GCS North American 1983. | Jason Weigle |
| 3/7/2005 | Update or Other Action | Added MRTS data, derived from ADNR and USGS range, township, and section data overlaid on lat/lon coordinates derived previously. Accuracy is equivalent to the lat/lon coordinates. MRTS information depicts the center point of range fans and target areas; actual target areas or fans may overlap several sections. | Jason Weigle |

| 3/11/2024 | ANCSA Program Ineligible | This site is not on ANCSA conveyed land and does not qualify for the EPA Contaminated ANCSA Lands program. This site will be listed as “ineligible” on EPA’s contaminated sites inventory. | Brittani Mack |
| 9/29/2025 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | COMPREHENSIVE MONITORING PLAN, Revision 9, Institutional Control Management Plan. DEC provided comments on CMP Revision 9 which describes the mechanisms that have been implemented to ensure compliance with institutional controls (ICs) for sites at the former Adak NAS (includes active sites and sites closed with ICs). The CMP also includes the details for Munitions Educational Awareness Program, which is required by the OU B-1 ROD and will address sites in the in-draft OU B-2 ROD. Note that munitions sites addressed in the OU B-1 ROD with slopes exceeding 30 degrees were issued No Further Action determinations as part of that ROD. This includes C3-01A through C3-01F, FB-01, FB-03, 260 HH-01, ML-01A, ML-01B, and ML-01C. | Jamie McKellar |
