Problems/Comments

Fly ash from Central Heating and Power Plant was deposited in a nearby gravel pit. Site not currently in use. Active 1972 to 1977/Currently inactive. Reference Document: 1982 IRP Phase I Records Search (CH2M). (rpltr4)

Upcoming measurements will be summer 2007, 2009, 2011, etc. Concentrations of VOCs, SVOCs, and metals in the sentinel wells have been monitored annually since 1992 and there has been no detection of contamination. 1/7/2020 Meeting or Teleconference Held A comment resolution meeting was held to discuss the remaining issues for the OU-2 remedial investigation-risk assessment report. DP028 contaminants and extent of contamination were discussed. The remedial investigation identified metals above project screening levels (PSLs) and background threshold values (BTVs) in fly ash; Volatile Organic Compounds (Chloroform, TCE, PCP,), Semi Volatile Organic Compounds (naphthalene), dioxins ( 2,3,7,8-TCDD), and metals above PSLs in soil; and metals above PSLs and BTVs in groundwater. The metals barium and chromium exceed the PSLs and BTVs in fly ash, surface soil, and subsurface soil and chromium exceeds the PSL in groundwater. Chromium speciation is recommended to determine whether hexavalent chromium is present. Dennis Shepard
8/4/2020 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) completed a backcheck review of the responses to DEC comments originally provided on November 30, 2018 for the draft version of the Final Supplemental Remedial Investigation/Risk Assessment Report for OU2 Source Areas, Eielson Performance-Based Remediation, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, June 2020. This report summarizes the remedial investigation (RI)/risk assessment (RA) activities conducted from 2016 through 2017 at source areas in Eielson Air Force Base Operable Unit 2 (OU2). The backcheck of the responses and redline document found that all responses were acceptable and the document is being finalized for DEC and EPA approval. Dennis Shepard

The scope of this Supplemental RI is to address current data gaps at the CERCLA source areas on Eielson AFB. The data gaps are generally related to the incomplete characterization of site contaminants under the 2015-2021 Performance Based Remediation (PBR) and emerging contaminants identified since the 2015-2021 PBR.
