Problems/Comments

The U.S. Army first developed facilities on Shemya Island in 1943 to support operations against the Japanese occupation forces on the nearby islands of Attu, Agattu, and Kiska. In 1954, the site was deactivated, and was turned over to the Civil Aeronautics Authority in 1955. In 1958, the Air Force returned to Shemya Island to support various Air Force and Army strategic intelligence gathering activities. It has remained active in this capacity to the present. In 1995, the station was downsized and reverted to caretaker status and a private operation and maintenance contractor took control of the facility under contract to the Air Force. Eareckson AS is situated on Shemya Island, approximately 1,500 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska at the westernmost tip of the Aleutian Islands. Shemya Island is part of the Near Islands group of the Aleutian Archipelago. Shemya Island is owned by the U.S. Government and is under the jurisdiction of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Based on historical research, this site was erroneously entered into the CS database. ST40 contains USTs 600-1 through 600-4. UST 600-1 is a 20,000 gallon diesel UST, that has been active from 1991 to 2016. UST 600-2 is a 250 gallon diesel AST, which was erroneously registered as a UST in the early 1990s. The USAF sent a request to ADEC in 1994 requesting delisting of Tank 600-2. UST 600-3 was a used oil tank that was removed in 1997. There is no information available for UST 600-4, and it is presumed to either not exist or be a duplicate listing in the UST records. No documented releases were reported for these tanks. A no further action document was approved in 1995 for this site, when ST40 was transferred to USAF Compliance Program. The tanks were to be addressed under the appropriate ADEC UST regulations. In January 2000, ADEC set a letter to the USAF stating that no further action was required for UST 600-3 based on the non-regulated status of the tank and the limited amount of contamination.
