Problems/Comments
The former Chefarnmute Corporation tank farm stored diesel and gasoline for use in the village. The Corporation tank farm is now located within the consolidated tank farm. There were no documented spills at this site, however active leaks were noted during the DCRA Bulk Fuel Inventory conducted in 1998. The tank farm consisted of several vertical and horizontal aboveground tanks with a total fuel capacity of approximately 84,300 gallons. The tanks were welded steel construction and were skid mounted and placed on timbers directly on the tundra. Site assessment performed in August 2001. The tank farm was unlined and had no containment berm. The area outlined by the former Chefarnmute Corporation tank farm was filled with dead and stressed vegetation. This may have been the result of contamination or shading of the ground by the tanks. Analytical sample results from the hand auger sample locations indicate DRO concentrations ranged from 37.5 mg/kg to 1,070 mg/kg(note: GRO and BTEX was not analyzed). The contact for this site was Jack Wiseman who was the acting manager for the Chefarnmute Corporation.

4/24/2013 | Site Characterization Report Approved | On this date, ADEC received the Site Characterization Chefornak Light Plant Former Tank Farm and Former Chefarnmute Corporation Tank Farm submitted by S&W dated December 2012. A total of 17 soil borings were advanced: nine at the Light Plant former TF (1.5 to 3.0 feet bgs) and eight at the Chefarnmute Corp. former TF (1.2 to 4 ft. bgs). At least one soil sample was collected per boring based off pid levels and field observations. Three of the nine soil samples collected at the Light Plant former tank farm contained DRO above cleanup levels. These soil samples - including B8, B8 dup, and B7 - contained DRO up to 643 mg/kg. Two of the nine soil samples collected at the Chefarnmute Corp. former TF contained DRO above cleanup levels. These soil samples - including B10 dup and B15 - contained DRO at 262 mg/kg (at 2.5 to 3.0 ft. bgs) and 18,600 mg/kg (at 1.5 to 2.0 ft. bgs) respectively. | Grant Lidren |
6/30/2015 | Update or Other Action | File review completed. No new information available. SUMMARY: Contamination was originally identified during a Village of Chefornak Site Assessment Project completed in August 2001. The purpose of the site assessment was to investigate the presence and extent of contamination at five former bulk aboveground storage tank (AST) facilities in Chefornak. During the assessment, limited sampling was completed and revealed that diesel range organic (DRO) was present in the surface soils up to 1,070 mg/kg at this site, which exceeds the ADEC migration to groundwater (MTG) cleanup level of 250 mg/kg. Further characterization was completed in 2012 by the City of Chefornak. Soil samples were collected from 8 soil borings that were advanced to depths between 1.5 and 3 feet below ground surface (bgs). DRO was present in all soil samples (except one) between 37.2 mg/kg and 262 mg/kg. One soil sample exhibited a level of DRO at 18,600 mg/kg, but other samples collected in the vicinity are much lower in concentration. | Joshua Barsis |

12/5/2017 | Update or Other Action | Overdue work plan letter sent to City of Chefornak | Erin Gleason |
4/30/2021 | Update or Other Action | Updated and verified site location. Location (lat/long) on CSP database was 60.159972 -164.285851. I updated the coordinates on the CSP database to reflect sampled location (B-11) where DRO concentrations were greater than 1000 mg/kg. GPS coordinates were gathered from 2012.12Characterization Rpt (located in the following folder: \\An-svrfile\groups\SPAR\CS\38 FilesCS\2408 Chefornak\2408.38.005 Chefornak Chefarnrmute Corp Tank Farm\Older Documents). | Ginna Quesada |
8/7/2024 | Site Visit | DEC, ANTHC, and EPA visited contaminated sites and provided community outreach as part of the ANCSA Contaminated Lands Program. Interviews with local residents were conducted to gather site history and general knowledge of the areas. No clear history of the tank farm area is known. It is believed Hazard ID 3778 existed first, then tanks were moved to the area of Hazard ID 3779. Tanks were then consolidated with another existing tank farm in the area and are now known as the Consolidated Tank Farm, which is not an active contaminated site in the DEC database. | Shonda Oderkirk |
