Problems/Comments
The tank owned by the Store is located approximately 30 feet south of the south bank of the Kinia River. ADEC records and personal interviews indicate that the tank leaked in late May of 2000 and released approximately 100 gallons of heating oil (diesel #1). Corrosion of the tank bottom was cited as the cause of the release. A cleanup effort was conducted from July 26, 2000 to July 31, 2000. An area of approximately 240 square feet was excavated to depths ranging from 1 to 2 feet bgs. The material removed from the spill area was peat. The excavated peat was placed into a stockpile underlain by 6 mil plastic sheeting. Site assessment performed during August 2001. At that time stockpile was uncovered and located between onsite ASTs. One soil sample collected from the stockpile contained the following concentrations GRO at 819 mg/kg, DRO at 21,4000 mg/kg, benzene at 0.0955 mg/kg, ethylbenzene at 9.39mg/kg and xylenes at 71.2 mg/kg. Two soil samples collected from the excavation floor contained a benzene concentration at 0.137mg/kg. A petroleum odor was noted at the depths of the excavation. The contact for this site was John Avugiak and Oscar Wassillie. Mr. Avugiak owned the tank and Mr. Wassillie coordinated the site cleanup effort. The stockpile remained onsite in 2001, approximately 30 feet from the excavated area and approximately 100 feet from the Kinia River according to site figure. Indeed a site visit in 2012 by ADEC indicates the stockpile is still on site, overgrown with vegetation.

Interviews with local residents were conducted to gather site history and general knowledge of the areas. During the site visit, a mounded area was found south of the tank. It is believed to be the stockpile. Evidence of a bottom liner was found at the edges and under the mounded area. Vegetation was growing on the mounded area and did not appear to be stressed. No smells or stressed vegetation were noted around the tank. A small structure, possible a pump, was also noted near the tank. | Shonda Oderkirk |
