Problems/Comments

This site is the former Old Harbor Fuel Company tank farm in Old Harbor, Alaska. The tank farm was abandoned in 2001, but fuel and water still exists in the tanks. There are five aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) on a heavy timber stand right next to Sitkalidak Straits. Total capacity of the tank farm is 76,400 gallons. Test pits were dug by Hart Crowser to determine the extent of impact. The soil sample, collected 4 foot bgs, had a benzene level of 0.25 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). No sheen was visible on the beach gravel immediately east of the ASTs at low tide but sample results from the test pits indicate that there is a high likelihood of leaching of diesel range/gasoline range organics (DRO/GRO) to a marine environment. Residual contamination still exists in the tanks. This site will be addressed by the TAPL program.

DRO (2.88 mg/L) was detected in the groundwater sample above the ADEC cleanup level of 1.5 mg/L. Benzene (maximum 0.808 mg/kg), benzo(a)anthracene (0.967 mg/kg), naphthalene (maximum 0.967 mg/kg), and/or DRO (maximum 551 mg/kg) were detected in at least one soil sample above ADEC cleanup levels of 0.022 mg/kg, 0.70 mg/kg, 0.038 mg/kg, and 250 mg/kg. respectively. The remaining tested analytes were not detected or below DEC cleanup levels. Sheen and petroleum odor was observed in several test pits including TP-20 which was located on the beach directly down gradient or the former ASTs and fuel lines.
