Problems/Comments

Site 36, the Former Small Arms Firing Range, is located between runways 36 and 28 at the Kodiak Municipal Airport. When in use, between the 1970’s up until 1986, small arms were discharged at targets backed by an earthen berm. Expended rounds have contaminated the surficial soils in the berm with lead. Initial studies have not found contamination at depth or contaminated groundwater. Lead from the spent bullets is the primary contaminant of concern. The impact berm was originally constructed as an aircraft revetment during World War II. The revetment was intended to provide protection for parked aircraft and/or munitions during an aerial attack and is now considered a feature of a Natural Historic Landmark. To avoid adverse impact to this feature of a Natural Historic Landmark, the site will be restored to its present condition following the interim measures. 850’ east of Runway 36 and 300’ south of runway 28.
