Problems/Comments

Heavy metals (arsenic, silver, antimony, lead, selenium, silver, mercury, thallium, and zinc) present in tailings and soil at elevated levels. 800 cubic yards estimated. Site is located in roadless area of the Tongass National Forest south and east of Ketchikan. Includes mine, millsite, and Gold Banner mine and millsite. Contaminated tailings are present in the inter-tidal area. EPA ID AKN001002545; EPA site name USDA FS Tongass NF: Sealevel Mine.

11/17/2005 Update or Other Action Notification from EPA to the FS that the site was listed on the Hazardous Waste Compliance Docket. PA/SI documents submitted by the FS allowed EPA to conduct a Hazard Ranking System evaluation. The site scored high enough to be considered for inclusion on the NPL. EPA made a determination of "Other Cleanup Activity" on November 10, 2005. EPA recommends that the FS and State work together to determine levels of contamination is soils and sediment. Bill Janes

9/2/2016 Update or Other Action On this date, DEC sent a letter to the USFS requesting action on a number of sites. For this site, DEC stated: The USFS conducted an EE/CA in 2001 without input from DEC. In 2002, DEC issued a letter non-concurring with the recommended alternative and requesting a revision of the cleanup levels and further discussion of additional alternatives. In 2009, DEC participated in several meetings with numerous agencies regarding requested permits from an adjacent landowner to construct a lodge. DEC was concerned with possible movement of contaminated soil and sediment and the potential for increased exposure to contamination. In August 2016, the USFS stated that it intends on conducting an EE/CA in 2017. DEC hopes to participate in a joint site visit later this month or in April. Anne Marie Palmieri
7/17/2017 CERCLA PA ADEC conducted an Abbreviated Preliminary Assessment on the State-owned tidelands downgradient from the USFS-managed uplands as part of the EPA-funded Site Discovery Program. No contamination was found on the tidelands. Anne Marie Palmieri
