Problems/Comments
Potential contamination from fuel storage tanks used to heat the former apartment building. The apartment building and fuel tanks have been removed. Other possible sources include DOD fuel lines off site. Groundwater sample results exceeding cleanup levels were 1.89 milligrams per liter (mg/L) gasoline range organics (GRO) and 57.4 mg/L diesel range organics (DRO) in Boring B7. Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) Heritage Land Bank (HLB). The site formerly was a housing complex from approximately 1961 to 1997.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
11/20/1997 | Update or Other Action | Approved transport of approximately 135 cubic yards of contaminated soil to be disposed of in the Anchorage Landfill. Maximum contaminant levels were 680 mg/kg DRO and 0.13 mg/kg benzene. | Eileen Olson |
1/8/2003 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Reviewed the Shannon & Wilson, Inc. "Limited Phase II Environment Site Assessment, Hollywood Vista, Tract 2” report dated January 2003, received this date, which documents site assessment activities including drilling and sampling soil from 8 boring for GRO, DRO, BTEX, and VOCs and developing and sampling groundwater from 4 monitoring wells for GRO, DRO, BTEX, and VOCs and PAHs from MW-1 only. All soil sampling results were below cleanup levels except for methylene chloride which was attributed to laboratory contamination. Groundwater sample results exceeding cleanup levels were 1.89 mg/L GRO and 57.4 mg/L DRO in Boring B7. No GW samples contained detectable BTEX or PAH constituents. VOCs were detected in samples from five of the six monitoring points and hydrocarbon fuels were detected in one sample. Methylene chloride results in GW samples were also attributed to laboratory contamination. GW flow is to the south. Further characterization is needed and may focus on the vicinity of Boring B7 in order to determine whether a potential off-site contaminant source exists from nearby military fuel lines. VOCs in GW sampling results were similar to those detected in off-site seeps to the southeast of the site. | Elizabeth Stergiou |
1/9/2003 | Update or Other Action | An email response from the Elmendorf AFB Project Manager was received to the hypthesis that contamination from an off site source, the Defense Energy Office pipelines, may be migrating onto the site was addressed. Althought the hypothesis was not dismissed it pointed out that the data indicating potential off site contamination was taken from a temporary monitoring well that was not properly installed and developed prior to sampling. Further investigation is warranted. | Louis Howard |
