Problems/Comments

The C-Camp heating fuel distribution system was installed in the 1970's. In 2002 an effort to replace heating oil with propane for the C-Camp area was undertaken. A fuel oil odor was noted by the personnel conducting the work at most of the valves and joints. This contamination is believed to be contained in shallow soils as the lines were either laying above ground or within 6 inches of the surface. There is an estimated 250 cubic yards of contaminated soils along the pipe line route. Site also includes 7/12/02 release of heating oil from aboveground fuel line that occurred during piping abandonment associated with replacing fuel oil heaters with propane in the resident cabins at C-Camp. In April, 1997 there was a 1,500 gallon diesel release (Spill No. 97309909401; PERP File No. 220.02.003), that was closed by PERP in January, 1998. Groundwater contamination at C-Camp area is managed under NPS Denali Nat'l Park C-Camp Auto Shop UST Spills site, file number 220.26.005/hazard ID 23137.

Basic approval for early stages of site investiagtion.Waiver approved for sampling by NPS personnel. Mike Jaynes
1/26/2005 Update or Other Action NPS submitted over-excavation and remediation report. A total of 175 cubic yards was excavated from 38 individual locations. Soil samples for 14 sites exceeded DRO cleanup levels. BTEX exceeded cleanup levels at two of these sites. Contaminated soil was stored at the 7-mile pit until it was hauled to OIT for thermal remediation. Remaining excavation work planned for the east side of the site was deferred until 2005. NPS also plans to complete additional work at Buildings 185, 152, 153, 154, and 155 in 2005. (Action entered in 2008) Janice Wiegers
1/26/2005 Update or Other Action Hart Crowser submitted an investigation report describing installation of 8 soil borings, 4 of which were completed as monitoring wells (MW-5, MW-6, MW-7, MW-8). DRO exceeded soil cleanup levels in MW-5 and BH-4 at shallower depths, but not at deeper depths. DRO exceeded groundwater cleanup levels in MW-5, and was present, but below cleanup levels in the downgradient wells MW-7 and MW-8. Groundwater was found 33 to 57 ft bgs. (Action entered in 2008) Janice Wiegers
6/22/2005 Update or Other Action Spoke with Bill Heubner of NPS who stated Hart Crowser has discovered 2 feet of product in monitoring well just north of the site (MW-3 on Auto Shop site). NPS to move a product recovery system in place and will discuss issue further. This may be associated with the separate fuel distribution site. Mike Jaynes
9/16/2005 Update or Other Action Hart Crowser submited a groundwater monitoring report for samples collected in June. All June samples are non-detect, except for MW-5, which contains DRO below cleanup levels. (Action entered in 2008) Janice Wiegers
12/1/2005 Update or Other Action Hart Crower submitted monitoring report for Fall 2005. (Action entered in 2008) Janice Wiegers
3/13/2006 Update or Other Action NPS submitted over-excavtion and remediation report for the east side and center of the site. Excavations were completed at 12 locations with 400 cubic yards of contaminated soil removed. The soil will be stored at Mile 7 until it can be remediated at OIT. Several areas were re-excavated based on the results from the 2004 excavation work. Due to concern about structural integrity, residual contamination was left beneath a cabin with a DRO level of 1000 mg/kg. Significant volatile contamination was also found at Building 154 - which was the location of a paint shop in the 1930's. Benzene, methylene chloride and chromium were present in one sample from this location. Excavation was stopped at Building 154 due to high voltage lines. NPS plans to move the electrical lines and continue excavation in the future. (Action entered in 2008) Janice Wiegers
3/31/2006 Update or Other Action Workplan was submitted to assess groundwater quality and flow characteristics. Additional investigation of the groundwater near MW-8 was also planned based on discovery of contamination near this location in 2005. According to the workplan, in 2005 NPS removed 375 cy of contaminated soil from excavation activities in this area. (Action entered in 2008) Janice Wiegers
9/8/2006 Update or Other Action Groundwater monitoring report submitted. Petroleum was not detected in the wells sampled. (Action entered in 2008) Janice Wiegers
9/18/2006 Spill Transferred from Prevention Preparedness and Response Program Site transferred from PERP staff Toivo Luick. Spill no. 02309919301; spill date 7/12/02; substance = diesel (heating oil); amount 480-500 gallons; PERP file no. 220.02.001. The National Park Service was in the process of replacing the fuel oil heaters with propane in the resident cabins at C-Camp when a construction crew ruptured an aboveground fuel line connected to a full or nearly-full 500-gallon tank during piping abandonment. 170 cubic yards of contaminated gravel were removed but the excavation had to stop at 15 feet below ground surface due to potential threats to the integrity of the road and nearby structures. 12/5/2006 Update or Other Action Updated site name per Project Manager. April Woolery
6/11/2008 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Initial ranking with ETM completed. Janice Wiegers
5/23/2012 Site Visit Performed a site visit at the C-Camp Auto Shop site and the C Camp Emergency Services/Fire Management Building site in Denali National Park & Preserve. National Park Service (NPS) staff gave us a tour of the C-Camp sites, sites in the Headquarters area and the Hotel Powerhouse site. At the C-Camp site we observed drilling and soil sampling for the installation of a monitoring well. Melody Debenham
