Site Report: NPS Talkeetna Dormitory
We make every effort to ensure the data presented here is accurate based on the best available information currently on file with DEC. It is therefore subject to change as new information becomes available. We recommend contacting the assigned project staff prior to making decisions based on this information.
Problems/Comments
A leaking heating oil fuel line caused a release underneath the dormitory building during the winter of 2002-2003. Most of the fuel was contained on the vapor barrier; however a small amount reached the soil beneath it. A soil removal was performed in October 2004. Five GW wells at the MTA office at the corner of 2nd and B Sts and a private well at the Talkeetna Motel across the street. Groundwater in the area is estimated to flow south/southwest at an average depth of 8 feet below ground surface.

Requirements
| Description |
Details |
| Advance approval required to transport soil or groundwater off-site. |
Standard condition. |
| When Contaminated Soil is Accessible, Remediation Should Occur |
Remaining soil contamination is present in a thin layer just above the groundwater table at seven feet below the ground surface and is covered by clean fill and a vapor barrier underneath the building. In the event remaining contaminated soil becomes accessible in the future for example due to buildings being removed or other construction in the area, ADEC must be notified, and the soil must be characterized and remediated, if determined necessary by the ADEC. |
| Movement or use of contaminated material (including on site) in a manner that results in a violation of the water quality standards is prohibited (18 AAC 70) |
Standard condition. |
| Other |
The National Park Service has agreed to place a notice on its Geographic Information Systems (GIS) land management tracking database as to the location of the residual contamination exceeding ADEC’s default cleanup levels. |
| Periodic Review |
ADEC will conduct a review of site conditions every five years. |
| Excavation / Soil Movement Restrictions |
In the future, if soil will be excavated it must be characterized and managed following regulations applicable at that time and ADEC approval must be obtained before moving the soil off property. |
