Problems/Comments
The generator building is located 30 feet southeast of the school house building. Approximately 50 drums are stored inside the building some of which contained liquid that appeared to be motor oil. The drums appeared to be in poor condition. No staining was noted on the gravel floor of the building. Within two feet adjacent to the door there was an area approximatedly 7 feet in diameter which appeared to be coated with motor oil. The stained area included the top 3 inches of and organic mat. The mat is underlain by gravel. Samples taken at the surface indicate that DRO is present in concentrations up to 3,200 mg/kg. Samples taken at 1 foot below ground surface indicate that DRO is present up to 300 mg/kg. It is estimated that 2 cubic yards of soil has been impacted. Soil sample EG-02 results of 18,700 mg/Kg RRO were above DEC cleanup levels. Further cleanup/excavation work needs to be done. There are no year round residents. The school is no longer being used. Paint containing lead was used on the building. Asbestos was also present in some parts of the building, but not outside. Phase I Environmenal Assessment complete. Phase II in progress. As of 4/15/02 the school is noted as being closed in the Alaska Community Database.
