Problems/Comments
Glen Creek encompasses Gold King #1-15 mining claims. Multiple site files were created due to location confusion in early reports. The Gold King site file has been deprecated and all site updates will be documented under this site file.
These claims were placer gold mining claims that operated until the mid-1980s until the National Park Service acquired the claims. In 1991 during a Level I and Limited Level II Hazardous Substance Survey of the claims petroleum and mercury contamination were found. Petroleum contamination was found near the generator building, A-frame cabin, several drum storage areas, boxcar workshop, and burn pit. Mercury contamination found near Gold King #12 cabin. A reported 121 55-gallon drums, 158 5-gallon containers, 2 miscellaneous containers, and 36 batteries were also found. According to 2006 Waste Removal and Restoration Report 25 percent of the drums/containers were removed by landowner by 1996 and several stained areas were "presumably removed, spread out, or bladed over because they were not present during the 1996 survey". In 2004 the site was graded and stream channel of East Fork of Glen Creek was reestablished, and debris were removed. In 2005 further work at the site included removing waste, removing and thermally treating diesel-contaminated waste, and removing and disposing of mercury contaminated soil.
