Problems/Comments
Housing Building 102 had an associated 4,000-gal heating oil UST (UST 56-C-1) on the northeast side of the building. The UST was decommissioned on 6/18/97. Approximately 75 cu.yds of fuel-affected soil were removed and stockpiled on site. According to FAA, the stockpiled soils were placed in supersaks and sent to TPS Technologies in Seattle, WA for treatment. A FY97 release investigation concluded that soil contamination had reached groundwater and had migrated to the south. Some groundwater samples exceeded DRO proposed cleanup levels. The estimated volume of in-situ contaminated soil is 90 - 200 cu. yds, assuming an average thickness of 3 feet of contaminated soil. It was recommended that contaminated soil be excavated and that surface and near surface soils be used as backfill. Based on groundwater flow direction, it was determined that groundwater contamination is not likely to affect drinking water wells, and it is expected to naturally attenuate over time. Future activities include site characterization in FY04, followed by RAP in FY05, RAC in FY06, and site closure in FY07.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
8/11/1997 | Update or Other Action | 4000-gallon heating oil UST removed from FAA Housing Building 102. Approximately 75 cubic yards of fuel-affected soil was excavated in an effort to rmove the bulk of the gross contamination. Soils at the limits of the excavation were notably contaminated. The contamination was most prevalent near the groundwater interface. Estimated 75 cubic yards of fuel-affected soil remain on site. Confirmation sampling at limits of excavation showed up to 5900 mg/kg DRO in soil remaining | Debra Caillouet |
9/1/1997 | Update or Other Action | A release investigation occurred in September 1997 and the results were reported in the Final Release Investgation Report, Federal Aviation Administration Yakutat Station, January 8, 1998. The report concluded that the soil contamination associated with the former UST at Building 102 is restricted to the immediate area beneath the former tank. In this area, the soil contamination has reached gwoundwater and is present in the smear zone near the shallow water table. Based on data collected during the RI and the tank removal, the estimated volume of contmaed soil insitur at Building 102 is approximately 15-31 cubic yards. | Debra Caillouet |
