Problems/Comments

This site encompasses the Khayyam Mine, Stumble-On Prospect, and a tram terminal located on Omar Creek. At Khayyam Mine waste rock and soil areas have exceedances of aluminum, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, selenium, and zinc. Surface water at Khayyam Mine also exceeds Alaska Water Quality Standards (AWQS) of aluminum, cadmium, copper, lead, silver, and zinc. Sediment exceeds NOAA threshold effects level (TEL) of copper. At Stumble-On Prospect surface soil and waste rock exceeds cleanup levels for aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, selenium, silver, and zinc. Surface water exceeds AWQS for acute and chronic for aquatic life levels for aluminum, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc. Sediment exceeds NOAA TELs for cadmium, copper, and zinc. The tram terminal has soil exceedances of aluminum, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, manganese, selenium, silver, thallium, and zinc. Surface water exceeds AWQS for cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc. Sediment exceeds NOAA TELs for copper, nickel, and zinc. At Omar Creek water exceeds AWQS for aluminum, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc while sediment in the creek exceeds NOAA TELs for chromium, copper, nickel, and zinc. At No Name Creek AWQS exceedances of aluminum, cadmium, copper, and lead exist. Sediment in No Name Creek exceeds NOAA TELs for copper and nickel. 9/2/2016 Update or Other Action On this date, DEC sent a letter to the USFS requesting action on a number of sites. For this site, DEC stated: The USFS conducted a PA/SI in 2006 and found elevated concentrations of metals in soil and surface water as well as acid mine drainage. A sampling plan to collect additional samples for the EE/CA was approved by DEC in 2010. DEC has not received a draft EE/CA report for review and comment, but understands that the USFS has this document. DEC requests that by October 1, 2016 the USFS provide the draft report to DEC for review and comment. Anne Marie Palmieri
