Problems/Comments

During a site reconnaissance and assessment of rural bulk fuel tank farms, staining and petroleum odors were observed. Limited sampling confirmed soil contamination exceeding ADEC cleanup levels for DRO. The City Tank Farm is scheduled to be replaced.

6/14/2010 Update or Other Action Conversation with Mayor Richard Sharpe. Mr. Sharpe said the tank farm was upgraded in 2002, one year after the site recon report. According to Mr. Sharpe, Bristol Environmental conducted some soil removal, but the report for these activities has not been located. Bill O'Connell
4/5/2013 Meeting or Teleconference Held Spoke with Mayor Sharpe (Chignik) about characterization and remediation at Chignik. The contaminated soil stockpile remains near the landfill, and we've agreed that the ADEC PM will screen and sample the stockpile and City Tank Farm during a site visit in mid-to-late May. 5/29/2013 Site Visit DEC coordinated with the Lake and Peninsula School District (LPSD) and the Mayor of Chignik and conducted a site visit May 2013. During the site visit, DEC collected soil samples from: a test pit at the Chignik Bay City Tank Farm, a test pit at the Chignik Bay School Quonset Hut, and from the Chignik Bay School stockpile located at the dump. At the Chignik Bay City Tank Farm, soil samples collected at a depth of 1.5 and 3 feet bgs did not contain petroleum constituents above cleanup levels. At the Chignik Bay School Quonset Hut, two soil samples collected 2 feet bgs did not contain petroleum constituents above cleanup levels. At the stockpile, seven soil samples collected 2, 6, and 10 feet into the pile contained DRO up to 2,420 mg/kg. At 6 feet into the pile, strong hydrocarbon odors, stained soil, shotgun shells, and broken clay pigeons were noted. After sampling, the stockpile was spread from 20 feet to 10 feet above ground surface and amendments including fertilizer, nitrate, and sulfate were spread into the pile to promote remediation.
