Problems/Comments

In October 2005 the Fairbanks North Star Borough had Shannon & Wilson conduct Residential Heating Oil Tank Assessments in conjunction with the Tanana River Floodplain Acquisition Project in Salcha, Alaska. During this investigation diesel range organics exceeding cleanup levels (361 mg/kg) at 7.5 to 9.5 feet below ground surface were discovered in the vicinity of the active home heating oil tank that is partially buried under the footprint of the garage.

8/17/2006 Meeting or Teleconference Held Met with the Benerths. Received written response to August 11, 2006 letter. Determined risks to drinking water well to be low, and amount of contamination to likely be very small. Shannon Oelkers
8/23/2006 Site Closure Approved The soil contamination identified at the property slightly exceeds the level considered protective of groundwater. It is not practicable to remove the tank and/or the soil based on their location beneath the garage. ADEC does not consider the residual contamination to pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment will require no further remedial action. The ADEC advises that periodic testing (every three years or after flooding) of the on-site drinking water well for volatile organic compounds would be most protective of human health. This testing is not required, but given the site location in relation to the well and the history of flooding, it is strongly recommended. Shannon Oelkers
