Problems/Comments
One well was drilled on the pad in 1980 and abandoned in 1992. The site consist of a gravel pad, reserve pit, and flare pit. Investigations found diesel range organics (DRO) in the gravel pad up to 2,780 mg/kg and in the reserve pit up to 1,080 mg/kg. DRO-contaminated drilling mud was released to the tundra during breakup in 1980. Tundra samples have contained DRO up to 2,170 mg/kg. Phase II assessment complete, corrective action is planned for 2006/2007.

9/6/2006 | Site Added to Database | Site added to the database. | Mitzi Read |
9/8/2006 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Received Term Well A Phase II Assessment and CAP Final. Phase II indicates DRO up to 2,780 mg/kg in the gravel pad, up to 1,020 mg/kg in the flare pit and up to 1,080 mg/kg in the reserve pit. Off pad samples collected from the tundra contained DRO up to 3,650 mg/kg, reportedly from oil-based drilling mud that leaked onto the tundra during breakup after winter construction of the reserve pit in 1980. | Bill O'Connell |
9/8/2006 | Cleanup Plan Approved | Corrective Action Plan indicates work will be conducted winter 2006/2007. The gravel pad will be removed, clean gravel will be used to backfill the reserve pit, contaminated and restricted use gravel will be transported to East Dock for reuse or landfarming as appropriate. Contaminated tundra will be transported to East Dock for landfarming. Drilling mud from the reserve pit will be excavated and trasmnported to the grind and inject facility at Drill Site 4. | Bill O'Connell |
3/23/2007 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Bill O'Connell | |
10/19/2007 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Recieved 2006 Corrective Action Report. Approximately 9,600 cy of clean gravel were excavated from the site and used as backfill at Pad 3 Cell 2 or other areas. Approximately 1,680 cy of contaminated material and 2,425 cy of restricted use material were hauled to East Dock for landfarming. Confirmation sampling indicated DRO contamination remained in one area at 1,750 mg/kg, however this sample was located one foot below tundra grade, so additional excavation was not conducted and the area was backfilled with clean gravel and overburden. | Bill O'Connell |
4/1/2008 | Conditional Closure Approved | The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) reviewed the environmental records associated with exploration site Term Well A. This site had been contaminated by the release of a hazardous substance; however, based on the information provided to date, ADEC has determined that no further remedial action is required, and that Term Well A can be closed subject to the conditions outlined in the Record of Decision The hazardous substance contamination has been adequately addressed and does not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment. | Bill O'Connell |
4/1/2008 | Institutional Control Record Established | There is contamination remaining above established cleanup levels at Term Well A but ADEC has determined there is no unacceptable risk to human health or the environment, and this site will be conditionally closed. This decision is subject to the following conditions: 1. A Notice of Environmental Contamination will be recorded on the ADEC database to document that there is residual contamination remaining on site above the most stringent ADEC cleanup levels; 2. Any proposal to transport soil off site requires ADEC approval in accordance with 18 AAC 75.370 (b) | Bill O'Connell |
