Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
9/18/2006 Update or Other Action Staff reviewed START report, 1993 Field Investigation, Gulkana Inventory Report and various memos. The 93 report indicates there were 3 full drums left at the current Ellis Air taxi of military origins. Staff had been requested to concur with a closure for the CON/HTRW project but until the disposition of those three drums is determined, a decision can not be made. Debra Caillouet

7/27/2021 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Follow-On Debris Removal and Site Investigation work plan was approved for the the Gulkana Prepositioning Area and U.S. Army Site. This work plan details the continuation of the debris removal at Dump Site #1 and the delineation of contaminated soils at AST Impact Area - Debris #3 Area. Activities at Dump Site #1 will included removing, segregating, and disposal or recycling of former military debris and containers. The bulk of the steel drums and vehicle bodies were removed during the 2019 field season. Activities at the AST Impact Area - Fuel Release Area (Debris #3 Area) will include a UVOST soil boring advancement accompanied by additional soil borings to collect analytical samples. Additionally, up to three temporary monitoring wells will be installed to evaluate the groundwater at this site and to collect analytical samples to determine if groundwater has been impacted. 2/6/2023 Update or Other Action DEC completed review and approved the Preliminary Assessment for the FUDS Gulkana Prepositioning Area and US Army Site and Gulkana Staging Field. This document presented the findings obtained through research at various archives and records facilities to determine presence of hazardous substances as a result of previous use, storage, and/or disposal at the site. Based on the information provided in this document and information from other projects on the same property, there is evidence of contamination from former military use and activities. Debris has been observed throughout the property, in addition to surface and subsurface soil contamination from past fuel storage practices. DEC concurs with the conclusion that possible hazards remain at the Motor Pool, Motor Shed, and Ordinance Warehouse and should be investigated. Kelly Walker
