Problems/Comments
In 2003, contaminated surface soils were observed in the vicinity of a 500 gallon above ground storage tank at a private residence. The cause of the surface staining was believed to have originated from leaking supply fittings or several 55 gallon drums located in the area. In 2006, the UAF Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management Department conducted interim removal and characterization activities. After excavation commenced, a 500 gallon underground storage tank (UST) was discovered approximately 2.5 feet below ground surface (ft. bgs) and 4 feet from the house. The UST was removed along with approximately 100 cubic yards of contaminated soil. The impacted soil was transported to be thermally remediated. It was estimated that 18 to 22 cubic yards of petroleum impacted soil remained below the slab-on-grade concrete foundation of the house. Five soil samples and one duplicate were taken from the excavation and analyzed for diesel range organics (DRO), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Two of the five samples contained contaminants above migration to groundwater levels, but below health based action levels (benzene 52.6 µg/kg and DRO 7,540 mg/kg). Based on the sampling locations and results, it is assumed the excavated areas successfully removed all contaminated soils except for under the foundation of the house. On September 12, 2008, a groundwater sample was collected from the well on site. The well was approximately 70 feet northeast of the project excavation limits. These samples were analyzed for DRO and BTEX. No analytes were detected above their practical quantitation limit. In June and July 2010, UAF personnel returned to the site to conduct additional excavation to reach the groundwater table at a depth of 6.5 to 7 ft. bgs to obtain a groundwater sample for analysis. The groundwater sample had detections of ethylbenzene and xylenes but were well below cleanup levels

2/28/2007 | Update or Other Action | ADEC reviewed the Excavation, Stockpiling and Remediation of DRO Contaminated Soils at 6295 Steese Highway report. According to the report, 93.16 tons of contaminated soils were excavated and thermally remediated. Originally they thought that the contamination was from the above ground storage tank and when they were excavating they discovered that there was a buried UST that had fuel left in it. All the accessible contaminated soils were removed. The excavation extended to 8 feet bgs which is where the groundwater was encountered. The groundwater was not sampled. They estimate 18 to 22 cubic yards of contaminated soil still remain beneath the slab-on-grade foundation of the house. | Deborah Williams |
3/6/2007 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ranking completed. | Deborah Williams |
1/22/2009 | Update or Other Action | POC from UAF called. He said they did gw sampling etc at site in Oct 2008. Will send reports/correspondence. | Neal Everson |
1/28/2009 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Received report from UAF. The on-site well was sampled for DRO and BTEX, AK102 and EPA method 8021 respectively. No analytes were detected above cleanup levels. It is unknown whether proper QA/QC procedures were followed- including well purging. The work was completed without an approved work plan. The well is approximately 70' from the source area to the north. Ground water gradient is unknown. | Neal Everson |
2/2/2009 | Update or Other Action | Sent letter requesting RP make further characterization recommendations. Requested other info in letter. | Neal Everson |
5/18/2010 | Update or Other Action | Met with Bill Krause and Thad Williamson about plans for site. UAF wants to remove the building because it is an attractive nuisance. The upper portion of the building will be demolished. The concrete foundation will remain in tact and will be buried. The tank pit also remains open, although it is fenced, and will need to be filled. UAF will submit a plan to sample groundwater in the excavation pit. | Janice Wiegers |
6/17/2010 | Update or Other Action | Approved waiver for third party groundwater sampling. Sampling will be conducted by Thad Williamson of UAF. | Janice Wiegers |
7/30/2010 | Update or Other Action | UAF provided DRO and BTEX results for a water sample collected by UAF personnel. The water sample was collected from a test pit dug in the bottom of the excavation. Benzene, toluene, and DRO were not detected. Ethylbenzene and xylenes were detected but below groundwater cleanup levels. | Janice Wiegers |
3/13/2013 | Update or Other Action | Site symbol visually adjusted using ArcGIS.com and documents and photos from the file. | Laurel Gale |
7/23/2019 | Update or Other Action | DEC sent letter to UAF requesting update on the site and demolition project previously anticipated. | Janice Wiegers |
10/30/2019 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 75291 Diesel home heating oil release. | Rebekah Reams |
11/20/2019 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | Cleanup complete closure letter sent on this date. | Rebekah Reams |
