Problems/Comments
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) conducted a site visit on September 28, 1999 and collected samples. All contaminants found were below cleanup levels. EPA status is no further remedial action planned and the site has been archived. EPA CERCLIS ID No. AKSFN1002150. Site is non-qualifying. This site approximately 3 acres in size and is located on the southern edge of Noatak, approximately 100 feet inland from the west bank of the Noatak River, and was formerly the (unpermitted) community dump from the 1970s until approximately 1995. The dump was subsequently covered with approximately 18 inches of gravel. Some areas have protruding debris, including rusted and crushed drums. Native Village of Noatak applied in 2008 and 2010 for DEC Brownfield Assessment of old dumpsite. Brownfield File No. 440.57.001 assigned for brownfield tracking. Project will consist of development of a Property Assessment and Cleanup Plan for the site to explore options for site closure and reuse. | 10/4/2010 | Site Visit | DEC's term contractor visited the old and current dumpsites in Noatak as part of the DEC Brownfield Assessment. Contractor reported that in late September Noatak had used the $12K grant from USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service to clean up stockpiled landfill debris and debris in the water at the Former Dumpsite. Cleanup focused on a large stockpile near the river that had reportedly been bulldozed there in about 1999 or 2000. Village environmental staff believes this stockpile comprised the entire contents of the old dump. Stockpiled debris and gravel were removed to the current landfill, where they were used as landfill cover material in the main landfill cell. The IRA environmental staff feels that cleanup is generally complete at the old dump. NRCS grant funds were used for fuel and operation of a bulldozer, two dump trucks, and an excavator. | Sonja Benson |
