Problems/Comments

Site characterization conducted in 2000 and 2001. A CO2 survey indicated a large area of potential hydrocarbon contamination adjacent to the wellhead, which was confirmed with soil samples that contained DRO up to 1,520 mg/kg. Another area of hydrocarbon contamination was confirmed at the western edge of the gravel pad next to the reserve pit with DRO up to 3,260 mg/kg. Hydrocarbon sheen was also noted in thermokarst troughs on the pad and in a lake south of the gravel pad

4/16/2007 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Recieved NPBS 1 Phase II Site Assessment Work Plan. Oasis will be advancing approximately 69 boreholes across the gravel pad, reserve pit, flare pit, the lake SE of the pad and in a tundra pond north of the reserve pit that contains various debris. Results of the Phase II investigation will guide reserve pit, flare pit, and gravel pad removal scheduled for 2007/2008. Bill O'Connell
10/26/2007 Site Characterization Report Approved Received Phase II site assessment and corrective action plan. The Phase II investigation advanced and sampled 25 boreholes on the gravel pad. DRO was detected in gravel pad samples ranging from ND to 18,700 mg/kg. 32 boreholes were advanced and sampled in the dry lake bed adjacent to the gravel pad, where DRO was found up to 3,660 mg/kg. Lake bed samples were generally shallow, < 2 feet bgs. The corrective action plan at this site will involve the following activities: Removal of wood pilings from the gravel pad, removal and segregation of the gravel pad gravel, removal of contaminated lake sediment, and confirmation sampling from excavated areas. Clean and conditional use gravel will be used to backfill the reserve pit, while contaminated gravel and lake sediment will be transported to East Dock for landfarming. Bill O'Connell
3/24/2009 Final Cleanup Report Reviewed Reviewed Corrective Action Site Closure Report for North Prudhoe Bay State #1. The entire gravel pad was removed, the well was cut off 4 feet below tundra grade, 130 pilings were cut off at tundra grade, contaminated lake sediment was excavated, and the reserve pit was backfilled. Approximately 5,200 cy of clean gravel were excavated from the gravel pad and used as backfill in the reserve pit and approximately 1,800 cy of contaminated material was hauled to the East Dock Land Farm for treatment. Approximately 918 cy of contaminated lake sediment was also hauled to East Dock. Material from areas B1 and B5 were considered E&P exempt and haulted to the DS4 G&I plant for down hole disposal. Confirmation soil samples collected from the former gravel pad footprint and the lake bed contained DRO up to 1,100 mg/kg Bill O'Connell
4/3/2009 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed a review of the environmental records associated with BPX North Prudhoe Bay State #1 located near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Based on the information provided to date, the ADEC has determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment, and this site will be closed. This site is included on the Existing (Contaminated) Sites Charter for the Development of the Alaska North Slope (Paragraph II.A.3; Exhibit D.2) D-2 list. Since this site no longer poses an environmental risk, it will be removed from the D-2 list on the Existing BP Charter for Development of the Alaska North Slope Program. Bill O'Connell
