Problems/Comments
Mine discharged waste motor oil to a pit and to an illegal landfill. From 1983 to 1988, approximately 50,000 gallons of waste motor oil disposed. Operations performed without a solid waste disposal permit. There have also been air quality violations. Health impact unknown. At least 7,500 cubic yards of contaminated soil excavated and placed in lined landfill area as of 12/89. Valdez Creek Mine entered into a settlement agreement with the AG's Office that required cleanup, mitigation and purchase of new equipment as well as payment of fines. Environmental Audit conducted, showed additional contamination problems with motor oil and poor operating practices. Approximately $1 million required for cleanup and repairs. Report received week of 12/19/88 indicated that approximately $967K spent on cleanup and remediation. Workers poured used oil into abandoned water well. Greater than 7500 cubic yards of oil contaminated soil placed in lined landfill area as of December 12, 1989. Much of used oil has been buried under 300 feet of fill material. Potential problem is leaching to Susitna River located approximately 1 mile west of site. Land owned by U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management. Permit is for operating mine. Last staff assigned were LeBeau and Krieber.
