Problems/Comments

Four areas of concern have been identified at the FAA Chandalar Lake Facility: 1) Former Tank Farm 2) Former Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) UST – tracked under File No. 702.26.001 3) NDB Soil Stockpile, and 4) Engine Generator Spill Site. Due to the presence of continuous permafrost, Arctic Zone cleanup levels apply at the Chandalar Lake Facility.

8/20/2009 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Approved the final work plan for release investigation and monitoring. Proposed work includes installing soil borings and monitoring wells at the Former Tank Farm site and the Non-directional Beacon (NDB) site, collecting surface water samples from the unnamed creek and Chandalar Lake near the Former Tank Farm site, and collecting samples from both the landspreading area and stockpile at the NDB site. Melody Debenham
6/10/2010 Site Characterization Report Approved Approved final Release Investigation and Monitoring report describing release investigation activities at the former tank farm, the non-directional radio beacon site, and the landspreading and stockpile areas. Melody Debenham
8/10/2012 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved final soil stockpile decommissioning and groundwater sampling work plan. The 100-cubic yard stockpile at the non-directional beacon (NDB) site will be decommissioned and samples will be collected from beneath the stockpile location. Groundwater samples will be collected from the monitoring wells at the NDB site and the former tank farm site. Melody Debenham
3/7/2013 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved the final report documenting groundwater sampling and soil stockpile decommissioning. Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells at the former tank farm site and the non-directional beacon (NDB) site and analyzed for gasoline, diesel, and residual range organics (GRO, DRO, and RRO); benzene toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). All results were below the cleanup levels. In addition to groundwater sampling, the 100-cubic yard stockpile of petroleum-contaminated soil generated during the decommissioning of the tank farm in 1999 was decommissioned. The stockpiled soil was sampled in 2009 and results were below the applicable cleanup levels. To decommission the stockpile, the soil was spread in a thin layer around the base of the NDB tower. Soil samples were collected from beneath the stockpile location and analyzed for GRO, DRO, RRO, and BTEX. All results were non-detect. Melody Debenham
7/13/2015 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved groundwater monitoring work plan. Nine monitoring wells, 4 at the former tank farm and 5 at the non-directional beacon site, will be sampled for GRO, DRO, and BTEX. Two wells from each site will also be sampled for PAHs. Melody Debenham
10/14/2015 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 75335 AST Fuel/Power System. Melody Debenham
2/8/2016 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Approved final 2015 groundwater monitoring report documenting groundwater sampling at the Former Tank Farm site and the Non-Directional Beacon site. One well at the Former Tank Farm site had diesel range organics above the cleanup level. All other results were below cleanup levels. Melody Debenham
6/12/2017 Update or Other Action During a file review for the Chandalar Lake site, it was discovered that a 50-gallon diesel spill, reported in 2002, has not been fully characterized and was not the focus of any subsequent cleanup activities. Sample results indicate that following the spill, DRO concentrations of up to 16,400 mg/kg were detected and presumably left in place. Investigation is ongoing. Jamie McKellar
5/14/2019 Update or Other Action Closure request letter for 3 AOCs received on this date. Request is to close the 1)NDB UST-B-1, 2)FAA Former Tank Farm ASTs 8-A-1, 8-A-2, and 8-A-3, and 3)the FAA NDB Stockpile. John O'Brien
