Problems/Comments

During excavation of a UIC well, benzene and toluene were found in soil at concentrations above ADEC method two cleanup levels. Groundwater had not been characterized as of site intake, however the site is located adjacent to Resurrection Bay and high chloride levels were recorded in site groundwater.

11/10/2008 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Groundwater and Stockpile Sampling Report Henderlong Site, dated October 10, 2008, submitted by Clarus, and received/reviewed by ADEC on this date. Two stockpile soil samples and one duplicate were tested for BTEX and GRO. Benzene at 0.773 mg/kg was the only analyte above ADEC cleanup levels. Reportedly the stockpile has been removed and has/is going to be thermally treated as ASR. Two GW samples and one duplicate taken from temporary MWs were also tested for BTEX and GRO. The only analyte detected was benzene at 0.00179 mg/kg, which is well below ADEC cleanup levels. Grant Lidren
12/11/2008 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other ADEC reviewed Soil Transport Confirmation Former Henderlong Site Seward, Alaska, dated December 5, 2008, submitted by Clarus, and received by ADEC on December 11, 2008. The onsite stockpile was removed and transported to ASR in Anchorage. On September 29, 2008 ASR received 24 cubic yards of benzene impacted soil for treatment. Grant Lidren
1/26/2009 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC), Contaminated Sites Program, has completed review of the environmental records associated with ARRC Henderlong Building, Seward. Based on the information provided to date, the ADEC has determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment, Therefore, the site is closed. This decision is based on the administrative record for ARRC Henderlong Building Seward, which is located in the offices of the ADEC in Anchorage, Alaska. Grant Lidren
