Problems/Comments

600 gallons of diesel fuel were released from an above ground home heating oil tank when the fuel line cracked due to shifting of the 1,000-gallon tank. The tank was located directly adjacent to a residential building. The spill is also located within 75 feet of a water well with a depth of 25 feet. The responsible party removed as much contaminated soil as possible without causing damage to the foundation of the house. It is estimated that ~60 cubic yards of contaminated soil were removed. The excavated soil was stockpiled on the site for remediation. An ADEC spill responder visited the site on April 19, 2007 and conducted field screening to locate the remaining contaminated areas. Four areas were located and samples were pulled for analysis. These samples yielded levels of diesel range organics (DRO) from 438 to 4,410 ppm; soil samples were not analyzed for BTEX. Drinking water samples indicated DRO at 0.56 mg/L, which is less than the drinking water action level; and BTEX constituents were non-detect. The excavated soil was piled on plastic tarps and the landowner added nitrogen, an enzyme solution, and turned it to enhance the remediation. The soil stockpile was spread on the property in 2013 without any testing. In 2016 The structure at the spill release site burned down. It is estimated that ~300 gallons of diesel remain under the foundation. The church was advised to draw periodic samples from the well to ensure that is is free of contamination.
